Gog has a nice rollback "feature" that lets you go back to an earlier version of a game if a patch messes up the game. Sounds nice. It's not. All ti is, is a start over feature. I can do that myself. I don't need Gog screwing me out of 100 hrs of progress with saying so. I can't do that all on my own. How stupid can you get.

As I understand it from some threads in other forums, Hello Games made some changes to the saved games file format in 1.58. As a result, 1.57 won't recognize a 1.58 save as valid and so will start over.

You can (and should) make your own periodic backups of the saved games directory. If you had made a checkpoint backup before choosing to install 1.58, then you could drop those saves into the appropriate directory after rolling back to 1.57 and be on your way.

Unlike some other platforms, GoG lets the end user decide whether/when to install a patch. Given how the recent patches have gone, grabbing a backup of the saved games before opting for any of the NMS patches is A Good Idea.

You should still be able to recover and run 1.58 if you made a backup prior to rolling back to 1.57. Granted, 1.58 has some real issues (WTF was HG thinking to release it in that state???) but they're not game killing, just annoying as hell. I don't *think* that NMS overwrites older saves (not 100% sure tho) so going back to 1.58 even without using a backup may be possible.
I did make hard copies of the save game files. The newest ones were thrash (1.58), so I had ditch Gog and run an old save since Gog refused to do anything but start a new game. Gonna get rid of Galaxy, I see no reason to keep it, don't "need" cloud saves that will never, and can never be used. Galaxy is just usless overhead. Gogs attempt at trying to be like Steam. They aren't even close.

When you get a version of the game you like, just untick the "Keep this game updated" checkbox under Galaxy--until such time as you think it is safe for your version to be updated. And as far as "rolling back" is concerned, how else *could* they roll back to 1.57 except by reinstalling the 1.57 version completely? If you roll back--I don't care what service you use or what the game is--if you don't handle your saved games properly (as in backing them up) that is 100% the player's fault, imo.

One thing Gog does that Steam doesn't--is provide you with a full *installable* version of the games you buy. I rather like that, myself, after 30+ years of buying games and receiving an installable copy of my own, it's expected...;) You don't sound as if you are aware that GOG also offers the installable NMS files manually--outside of Galaxy. Using Galaxy is an option with GOG--whereas with Steam, Steamworks is all you get.

Yep, Gog lets you get the game. Steam just lets you purchase the right to play the game not own the game.

Yep aware of it, didn't like the fact that I got no warning the it was going reinstall the game and wipe the saves under the guise of rolling back patch 1.58.
Why does Gog have to jerks?

i don't know about anyone else, but sometimes i just have to jerk too. It could be some music i'm listening to or just a general feeling of happiness and well being over life? Whatever the reason i find it hard to grudge GOG their ability to jerk when they want too.

Not adding anything to the thread, but reading your reply made part of my day. Pure genius -- Thanks :o)
