Galaxy refuses to synchronise my single save file for No Man's Sky because it exceeds the moronic 200MB per-game limit imposed by the idiots who run this place. (The file size is apparently 207MB, or so Galaxy says.)

Is there any way to trim/compress the saved game size so that Galaxy will no longer whine petulantly about it?

I'd understand the issue if I had multiple save files whose aggregate size exceeded some arbitrary limit, but this is one save file; I have no others.

The problem may be in the game directory "C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\DefaultUser\cache" which gets synchronised with the game files. Each time you add, rename, upload or delete a base computer in game creates a 900kB DDS image file in the above "cache" directory. These image files store a tumbnail image of the base and the game never deletes these files. Eventually these image files use a lot of the 200MB limit. Manually deleting the 900kB DDS image files in the above "cache" directory will probably fix the problem.

! Always take a back up before deleting anything !

The trick is to delete the files before closing NMS, when NMS is at the main menu screen, do not exit to desktop. If you delete the files before starting NMS, the synchronisation will download the files again.

Alternatively the GOG website has a method for managing cloud saves at GOG Support Center > GOG Galaxy > GOG Galaxy General Information > "Review your Cloud Saves to avoid loss of files" (<https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/categories/201553025-GOG-GALAXY?product=gog> click the "Review your Cloud Saves to avoid loss of files" link). It is not particularly user friendly and takes a lot of time.

That did it. Thanks for the pointer.
