When going multiplayer does it work now completely; i.e. also with Steam Players? Considering the amount of player base signals I got on that one event planet I was on some form of connection must already be there.

Still forthcoming, as I understand it. Discoveries and communication modules are currently shared. There also were (and probably still are) a couple of nice bases built near the exit portal (or one of the exits) from the last event that are worth visiting.
