I have 3 monitors and on one of my monitors, I've setup an excel spreadsheet with a lot of information that helps me in the game, one of which is a list of all of the items I have in my each of storage bins. I have to go look at each bin and "plug in" the numbers, which takes 2-3 minutes to do, but to me, it's worth the effort since the only way you can access that information is when you're physically next to the bins (which by the way I have set all in a big "U" and standing in the center, I can just turn to each one to see what they contain without moving).

Now for the question: I don't need to do this right away and don't know if there is actually even a way TO do it, but does anyone know if there MIGHT be a way to have my computer access the information that says how many of each item there is in my storage units (I would think that someone who creates "Mod's" probably knows how to do that...) Then I could setup a Macro that would go grab that information, rather than getting it "manually")

I would think there's a way to do this - but not sure where I'd begin...

Thanx,

Dennis

Not sure if that's possible, but I believe if you click on an empty inventory slot, you may be able to see what's in your bins. I'm not sure if you need to be on your freighter or at your base to do so though.

The info is indeed in the saved game files. The files are JSON formatted, so they're plaintext and more or less human readable. There's an NMS save editor maintained by goatfungus (careful if you Google that phrase ;-) that allows reading and modifying the save files, including the ability to read the contents of the storage units.

I don't know whether there's anything out there which specifically addresses what you're looking for. It sounds do-able.

In the meantime, don't forget to add columns for storage in the exocraft, your ships, and in the freighter.

Gonna have some fun with this - thanx for the help!

Goats sounds like a game trainer, or cheat. What OP and myself are hunting for is not a trainer, but a management tool, which exports data, for clear comparison, but doesnt cheat.

Something like chmod made for Dwarf Fortress. Called Dwarftherapist, it would export when prompted to, a new list of dwarfs, including enormous detail on each dwarf, it did this while game was running. I would ask that a Freightertherapist be made, myself. To keep track of Korvax, Vykeen, Gek and ghost vessels in the fleet.

Understood. I've never used it (wouldn't be sporting!) but it demonstrates that it's possible to parse the save file and extract the storage unit inventories.

My knowledge of JSON is limimited to skimming the Wikipedia page but there are toolkits out there (e.g., for Python) which should make grabbing the data pretty straightforward, as well as Python modules to export the info in several formats. I"m not a Pythonista (old school K&R -- I still have one of dmr's old bang adresses around here somewhere) but it looks do-able.
Currently there is no such 'device' that tells you all about your inventory, BUT: Such a device is not necessary, because if you hower with your mouse over any slot and press X, then you get to see all your inventories, you can also filter it, now including the new storage rooms, but not your other starship's and exocraft's inventory (unless you have placed an exocraft currently). For knowing what's in your other starships or exocrafts, sorry, you still need to switch to them.

Or: save the game, ALT-TAB out to Windows, fire-up the NMS Save Editor and go look in the appropriate tabs. But yes this is an exotic solution only :)

I agree it would be useful and nice that EVERYTHING is shown with the X key.

Several games allow this sort of feature. Anarchy Online was the first I encountered that had websites devoted to parsing a player's data and comparing it to a central database, for tracking gear upgrades, implants, missions, and other goals. Guild Wars 2 has several third-party websites that do the same thing, and in fact Arenanet allows you to generate a seed that can be used with these websites so that your data is encrypted but still usable by those sites.

I can't remember the name now, but there was an MMO I played that allowed exporting save game data in tab-delimited or comma-delimited format for use with Excel.

It's not to be "unsporting", it's for people who like to crunch the numbers and see what an upgrade is doing for them or find a way to maximize in-game performance. It's usually allowable by the EULA, because it's not really cheating.

That said, if Goatfungus' editor can parse that data, it means the data is accessible and not in the form of seeds or other impenetrable encryption. It's eminently do-able, just no one has done it yet.
