In my new game I decided I wanted to make one base per galaxy.
All bases next to a portal so I could have that galaxy at my fingertipps.
I have now progressed to the seventh galaxy, Budullangr, which is the first "empty" galaxy.
My scheme for jumping galaxies is:
1. switch to my second starship which has all tech in tech slots, and no hyperdrive upgrade because thats useless for gating to a new galaxy
2. switch to my first multi-tool which has only a damaged mining tool and no other tech
3. gate to the new galaxy
4. switch back to my "real" multi-tool
5. call my "real" starship
6. check if the current star system is cool (economy tier 3, conflict tier 1). So far it never was. Otherwise warp to another system (economy tier 3, conflict tier 1).
7. locate a portal (locate a monolith with the exocraft, solve the riddle [save beforehand with a Save Beacon or Save Point and retry if you fail], after success talk with the monolith again and spent a race dependent item for locating the portal)
8. create a new base at that portal. Since its a preliminary base with kind of random abilties, it wont be too optimal. I plan to return later and try to find a better location in that galaxy.
9. dial 1 bird / 0 sunset / 0 sunset / 1 bird / 0 sunset / 3 diplo / 0 sunset / 0 sunset / 5 balloon / 0 sunset / 0 sunset / 6 boat as described in the fan wiki:

https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Portal_address
10. warp to the closest gateway system and repeat the just described procedure
The funny bug is that the game claims I would have visited all kinds of systems in these galaxies despite the fact that I never had been in them before. Apparently they store the star system addresses without also storing the galaxy they care located in ! Pretty hilarious.
