So I finally got this game up and running well except for some sound problems. Every time I boot up the game and I go into Sound Settings then Advanced Sound Options "Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio" is selected which gives me no sound effects whatsoever. I have to change it to Dolby Surround and then everything works fine. I have to do this every time I boot the game up as the sound settings won't stay for some reason. Is there a way to edit a .ini file so that Dolby Surround will always be selected?
This question / problem has been solved by Namurimage
Go to the game folder, find the file nwn.ini and in the [Sound Options] section change the line

3D Provider=Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio

to

3D Provider=Dolby Surround

That should work.
Also, if needed, enable write protection for the .ini, so that the game can't change it back on its own. Of course, you cannot do any option changes ingame this way, so set everything else up correctly before you do this.
Yeah I noticed that the line in my nwn.ini file was just 3D Provider=
It was just blank and that it would change back to blank after I had input Dolby Surround and then started and exited the game. Maybe once I get everything the way I want it I will write protect it.

If you don't have the game installed in a non-programs-folder you might get problems with running the game as administrator.

The game SHOULD actually save your settings without needing to modify an ini file (although that might work also).

So one of the basics things of getting this game to run good a win7 or Vista system is to have it away from the default programs folder and run it as admin....but maybe you have that already...

Yes, this MAY be the case, and if it's installed in program files one should definately reinstall to some other location. But NWN has issues with some sound cards and sound options, so the game itself could be the problem, too.

I don't use the program files folder (i use D:\Games for all the games for example) and still i got the same problem with NWN not correctly detecting the audio setup and resetting my options in the process. So i had to go with manually editing the ini and then write-protecting it as well.

EDIT: And of course, i run all the games as admin!

Yeah I just have the game installed to C:\NeverwinterNights.
The game won't revert the changes made to the manually edited .ini if the game exe (nwnmain.exe) is ticked to Run as Admin. Since the game shortcut points to the launcher (nwn.exe) doing it on the shortcut probably won't do the trick as it does in most cases.

It did still reset my settings when i entered the (sound-)options ingame. ;)

But you should definately stay away from the options menu either way, with write-protect it will crash when you try to make changes and otherwise it may revert your setup... ^^

Really ? That's a pretty big bug then. How on earth did they get up to patch 1.69 with something like that not fixed ? :|

The game has some issues with my Realtek onboard sound card. I get occasional background sound/music stuttering, too. It got better with newer drivers, but i never managed to eliminate it completely...

And NWN never liked Realtek for some reason. On the old Bioware forums there were a lot of people complaining even about crashes because of certain sound cards...
I will mark Namur's first post as the solution because that's exactly what I was looking for. I had to write protect nwn.ini for it to stay changed though even when running it as admin (which I always do anyway with games).
