Whenever I equip a torch it Nevers lights up. Is there something specific to do this?

It's a bug. Just drop your torch on the ground, than pick it up. Must work after that.

you also should get an item near the beginning of the game that casts light so that is a good alternative to torches until you get items that already have light features on them. I don't think i've ever used torches at all in the game
