I think it is still broken. I am still early in the game and cannot advance. My second visit to the store is allowing no action with the storekeeper. I thought I was doing something wrong and refered to a walkthrough and found that I had done everything correctly. I even restarted the game and followed the walkthrough step by step and still could do nothing.

I have had no problems so far with GOG's release, using Windows 7 64 bit. I am trying to solve the summoning puzzle so will know soon enough if the infamous bug which skips important cutscene and makes the attaché case inoperable has been fixed. If not, someone on Steam shared a link to download original CD-ROM .EXE - use that and load a save from before you get the attaché case and everything will work.

However, in your case you claim to have an unrelated bug in the early phase of the game - I know nothing about that so cannot help, again in my case it's been bug-free so far (with caveat for the aforementioned infamous bug which still needs to be verified). Maybe it is related to the OS.

EDIT

Good news: I can confirm the GOG version does not suffer from the infamous bug which skips important cutscene after summoning and makes the attaché case inoperable.
The discussion on Steam still does inform you that the gameplay sequence immediately after the summoning has always been buggy in the following ways: opening your inventory then closing it will replay the whole cutscene you've just had (you can skip it but still), and you should not save until you've moved on from the place with Edgar (otherwise you inherit a corrupted save and crash).
That's all - played and tested on Windows 7 64 bit.

Alas, I seem to be having problems with the summoning sequence. The cutscene isn't missing, but part way through it (always in the same place) it causes my computer to go into hibernation. When I turn it back on, the game has skipped the scene. I think I'm going to have to watch it on youtube.
EDIT: The summoning worked correctly for me, at first I used a wrong herb, but then I noticed my mistake and it was good. :)

I don't know about the steam version. But I've bought the GOG version in 2023 and I can't play it. I don't know if it was the Windows 10 updates or Nvidia drivers updates, or if its the lack of game fixes or updates by GOG. The thing is, the intro cutscene is cut at the initial credits and at the beginning when someone knocks at the door and I open it, during that cutscene the Phoenix VR error appears and crash the game. Then I tried to change the compatibility mode from Win 98 to Win 7 and the same error happens. Then I tried old CD versions of the game and only one, a portuguese version, runs well without the cut in the Intro cutscene, and no crash at open the exit door cutscene, but now the problem is the game is all dubbed in portuguese with no english install option. Both games (the GOG and the CD version) are updated to 1.26. I don't know more what to do with all this. Any ideas?
