I intend to run Riven on either my Windows 98 (with a 3dfx Voodoo 3) or Windows XP with a GeForce3 card. Will this GoG version work on legacy systems?

That's gonna be a maybe.
Especially since the GOG version is packaged via ScummVM.
Though, GOG is about getting games running on the systems of today, so this is also a choice you make knowing full well you're not getting any support.

Well, I tried Riven on XP is giving Kernel32 error.

If the error is about a missing function call (e.g. QueryFullProcessImageNameA or InitializeCriticalSectionEx) then this may be due to a bundled Galaxy.dll - see this post for a likely solution.
