Hello,
I'm having so much trouble with the piano puzzle in realMyst. I don't have the greatest ear for music, so I can't judge the tones very well when trying to match them on the sliders. So, I decided to try counting the keys and then counting the notes as I move the sliders upward, but the UI here is clumsy. Either my hand isn't steady enough to move it one note at a time or the distance between notes on the sliders isn't consistent. Is there a trick to having better control over the UI? Like anyway to move the sliders one note at a time with the keyboard? Or am I just going to have to continue trial and error?
Also, is there any well to tell which sliders I have positioned correctly so I won't be tempted to keep redoing even the ones I thought I had correct?
Thanks!

Hi,
That puzzle basically drives everybody crazy ;)
If you know how many knotches each slider has to go up, the best suggestion i have is try doing it really slow.
I've played Myst plenty of times and that one still gives me a hard time.
For your mouse, I there is a setting in the Setup file that tunes down mouse sensitivity. Click the start button, then if you're on Vista, look in your program files x86, then go to GOG.com, then the realMyst folder and look for an item titled realMyst setup (if you're running an older OS, it should be in your system files all the same. Can't remember off the top of my head what it's called in XP). Make sure you run this file as an administrator, otherwise your changes won't do anything. Now, if you look under the advanced options, there's a toggle for mouse speed. That could work.
Another, more convoluted method is to actually drag a keyboard into your computer room and either match the notes yourself or else have someone match them for you and play them one at a time while you synch up the sliders. Playing the first Myst was a bit of a family effort in my house and we actually used this trick once because we were having a similar problem.

after a long time trying to solve this puzzle, I turned down the speed of my mouse in control panel & was able solve it. the problem is trying to move your mouse very slowly to count the tones was almost impossible.
I just sang the notes...

Played it on the keyboard, matched it with my voice, moved the slider until unison. I do remember the sliders being fiddly in realMyst though.

I adjusted the mouse sensitivity settings and I think that I'm on the right track now. I'm still not able to solve it just yet but your tip was a good one thanks.
i just made a huge rant post inspired by this puzzle. And I DO have an ear for music. This puzzle is terrible. Thanks for the mouse sensitivity suggestions though. This might have made me retire from the game though lol
Instead of changing the mouse sensitivity, try this. Click on a slider and hold the mouse button down. Now move the mouse diagonally, at a shallow angle. You'll find the slider still goes up, but you're moving the mouse further so you have more control.

Now, with the bottom notch as 1, look for the slider moving in steps and listen and count the step changes in the tone to get it in position for the right key on the keyboard.

Something else about this puzzle - realising that the clue in the book is not just which note to play but which order they come in - that's a hell of a useful thing to remember when it comes to playing Riven.
Does anyone have a saved game where the Spaceship slider puzzle has been completed, please? I can not for the life of me get past it. Pretty please with sugar on top.
I am playing Myst Masterpiece Edition if that means anything.

Here's a Save Game for Myst Masterpiece Edition where the sliders are in position. Nothing else done on the Myst Island.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ty7637af5jqq1w4/SAVEGAME.rar/file
Just extract the RAR archive and place the files into your Myst Savegame directory
(Myst Masterpiece Edition/SAVEGAME)

and here's one for Real Myst Masterpiece Edition if anyone wants, same thing only the music sliders done.

THANK YOU so very much
I will never understand how so many people have so much trouble with this.
I don't understand why people have trouble with it either. And no one is more tone deaf than me. My shining moment was the 59 puzzle. Didn't get that at all. The seperating the voltages part.

For me the trouble was always that my mouse would slip while counting the octaves.

But counting isn't necessary, it's just matching the pitch...
