C'mon guys. Who did this release?

This game isn't a widescreen game. Why does it default to that???

Can we expect this to be fixed? Does anyone know a way to fix it?

I tried running nglide_config.exe and setting Aspect Ratio to Aspect Correction (and even tried Integer Scaling); no dice. Still fullscreen 16:9.

I expect better from GoG :/

Edit / Solution: It's not the release, it was my display having odd behaviors with low resolutions. Whoops.

I don't have the game, so can't help directly... but have you checked out your gpu (and maybe display/tv) scaling settings too? In general, I would try to get 1:1 centered lower resolution image first, or maybe even run the game in windowed mode just to see what it defaults to, observe the aspect ratio and work from there.
Worked perfectly for me after defining the correct resolution for the monitor in nGlide. Attached is the config I used (1920x1080 desktop).

As an alternative, you can remove nGlide entirely and use dgVoodoo2 with "Scaling mode" as "Centered, keep aspect ratio", which works at least in DirectX mode (config also attached). An advantage of this is that allows you to install ReShade as a DirectX 11 game and apply crazy shaders to MK4, with hilarious results. I'd write a guide about dgVoodoo2 + ReShade if anyone's interested.

A couple of comments about nGlide:

1.- It's not maintained by GOG, so it may be difficult to change default values. Also, "by app" means the resolution is not forced, something that is always considered more stable; its the proper way to know if the game runs or not.

2.- "Aspect correction" always worked. What happened to you is that you were running in a resolution "by app", meaning 640x480 in MK4, a 4:3 resolution. It was you monitor that presented you a 4:3 resolution in 16:9, ruining the aspect ratio. That's whay it was important to specify the output resolution.

I do agree that the screen/wrapper options should be better documented. A guide for configuring these graphic options wouldn't hurt.

I know what ya mean, but I do not have that setting on in my monitor or drivers. I just tested a different 1024x768 game in fullscreen (on a 1080p panel) - and while it did stretch it to fill the screen, it kept the correct aspect ratio, pillarboxed.

This release stretched to 16:9 by default on two different displays. Sure seems like that is the default.

Did this release not do that for you by default?

I have my computer connected to a TV, and this ALWAYS stretches to the entire screen, no matter the resolution or the game. It's the user who has to press a button in the remote control to change between 16:9 and 4:3.
Are you sure your 1024x768 game is not running at 1366x768 or higher, with a wrapper that applies the aspect correction? What game is it?
Your panel should have an "INFO" button (or something like that in the options) that shows the current resolution displayed.

Haha ugh, I figured it out. And of course it's stupid. This specific display (Asus ROG PG279Q) will stretch 800x600 (slightly) and 640x480 (to the full width of the display). Verified via its menu showing the current res... Anything above those it maintains a correct aspect ratio for. To further this stupidity, it has no options for it in its menus.

Tested a few other displays w/ default installs, and MK4 displays correctly on them, with the low res. It's just this stupid display with no options and inconsistent behavior.

Glad you figured it out. I had a rather solid suspicion it was either gpu or display/tv doing the stretching in your case. Very peculiar that there's no option in that particular display menu to disable it though. Dang, Asus is not what it used to be ;) Thanks for the info.
