I recently picked up the M&M 6-pack from here. They seem to be using DOSBOX. I know GOG sometimes modifies old games to work on modern hardware, so could I use old data files from the original '80s version of M&M2 to import into M&M3?

I have owned the Apple II version of Might and magic I, and the CGA/EGA MS-DOS version of Might and Magic II since around 1992, although I was not able to play the MS-DOS version until 1996 due to the fact that I was given the wrong version and was unable to exchange it.
In any case, I was helping my mom clean out the basement and found my old childhood computers still in storage. If I can get my old end-game save files from M&M2, and migrate them to the computer I installed the 6-pack on, could I import my characters into M&M3?

My old Windows 98SE/XP dual-boot computer still has a 3.5" drive, and I've got an old Windows 98 laptop, so they should be able to read the DSDD disks. I've only heard of Apple Quadras having HD 3.5" drives that could not read DSDD disks.

For the DOS versions, yes. Old saves will work fine.

EDIT: Meaning DOS saves will work on DOS versions of the same game. I just now read you meant importing MMII into MMIII.

M&M3 does not support importing characters from M&M2 so you will have to start with a new party.

I probably should have responded sooner.

Obviously I had yet to run M&M3. I knew that M&M2 had provisions for importing characters from M&M1, so I assumed that the next game in the series let you import as well.
Or at least I thought it did, it has been nearly 20 years since I last played. I just recall being unable to do so since I had the IIe verison of M&M1 and the PC version of M&M2 as they gave me the wrong version (I can't even recall who gave it to me nearly 30 years ago).

Nope, this series doesn't allow you to use the same characters for the whole series.

There are only two cases in this series where characters can be transferred between games:
* You can transfer from MM1 to MM2. (This is one-way.)
* If MM4 and MM5 are installed on the same system, they combine to form a bigger game known as World of Xeen; you can then use the pyramids to go between the games. (Note that, while you can go to MM5 early, you get so much XP in early MM5 that you can easily ruin all of the combat challenge in MM4, so it's suggested that you don't use any of the pyramids until you've defeated Lord Xeen and seen the MM4 ending.)

Well, I'd only played MM1 & MM2 when I made the post, and I played them before GOG existed back when we bought software on floppy disks from stores in places like malls or shopping centers.
I guess I should have tried the game before asking, or even installing.
I just made an assumption based on having played the first two as well as contemporary games to Might and Magic like Wizardry (I-V), Gold Box games, Bard's Tale, etc.
You know what they say when you assUme.

At least you didn't have to install MM4 and MM5 from floppies.

Judging from ebay listings (and similar), it looks like MM4 had 6 floppies, and MM5 had 8; given how slow floppy disks were, imagine how long it would have taken to install the games!

I think you can see why they started putting PC games, including later versions of World of Xeen, on CD. (With that said, there is an accessibility issue with the CD version; unlike the floppy versions, the CD version by default does not show any text when somebody is talking, creating an issue for deaf players or those playing without audio.)

(Sometimes, I think it would be interesting if there were a way to get those floppy disk images to get the actual experience of installing the game; it would be far more cumbersome than installing the GOG version, but it would at least be interesting. Failing that, the next best option would be a video showing the install, preferably not with any speed-ups or cuts.)

This is actually something the ScummVM engine for Might and Magic supports, allowing text and voice at the same time. The only downside to the implementation is that it only currently supports Adlib music, which may be an issue for audiophiles. But at least it gives hearing impaired users an extra option for playing the game.
