Hey guys, I've owned MM7 and 8 retail for the longest time and decided to pick them up off of GOG when they came on.

To my dismay, the starting video played very jumpy-like. I shrugged it off thinking it was nothing. When I get to the main menu, the screen is constantly flickering and tearing as if it's falling apart. Note that it's NOT flashing: It's tearing constantly. I got ingame only to meet the same problems, and on top of that my movement is all buggy, it's as if there's a strong wind to my left slowing me down, and to my right I move normally.

Following things I've tried

-Making a shortcut, compatibility set to windows 95, 98, XP. No dice.
-Disabling desktop composition and visual themes, no dice.
-Updating video drivers, no dice.
-Disabling Crossfire, no dice.
-Redownloading and re-installing the game, no dice.
-Have all windows and background apps closed before launching.

I'm on Vista 64, running an Ati Radeon 5970. I've had MM6 from GOG for ages and it runs with no problems, and my retail jury-rigged to work MM7 also works without any problems. Any reason why this might be happening?

I'd record a video, but Fraps doesn't want to hook into mm8 which is odd.

Greetings.

I have the same problem on Windows 7 professional x64, running an Ati Radeon 5970 as you, and MM1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 from GOG run with no problems...

I've tried the same as you and don't have luck finding a solution, hope to see some help about that problem because it's pretty bad can't play such lovely game.

Sorry for my bad english.

Your english is fine, no worries friend.

Glad to see it's not just me at least - hopefully a solution will be found.
Well, the movement bug at least has been mentioned in another thread, but with no full solution yet:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/might_and_magic_series/mm7_weird_issues_with_movement

They seem to suggest trying the "always run" option in the game options and enabling hardware acceleration if you're not running that already. But this apparently just mimimizes the issues, rather than solving them fully.

You can also submit a support ticket to GOG to see if they can help. Just hit the "support" button at the top of the page.

The typical solution for screen tearing is to enable VSync... is there an option for that in the game options? Can you force it in your graphics card control panel?

Yeah I did force vsync in CCC, but it didn't work sadly. Thanks for the thread link, all help is appreciated.

See, I kept getting this problem in VII and VIII, and I always disabled as many of the "new features" that were provided in the patches as I could. I've thought about doing the C++ upgrade instead, to fix the MSS32.DLL problems, but I've been putting it off due to school and working through earlier games in the series.

I hope I'm not correct in surmising that I have to take the non-bug related modifications to the games that come with these patches (so far I've only used Greyface). I remember when these games worked right out of the box (back when 3DO.com still existed and the official patches were still available through Gameupdate.exe). I was happy with them before I could double my cash with the fixchests mod.
Wow, silly me guys. I completely forgot the fact Mm8 has that configuration utility. Waltorious reminded me of it just now.

psikotiko, in your MM8 install directory, you will find "Mm8-Setup.exe"

I ran it, set it to hardware accelerated and the screen-tearing went away.

However, I'm still having that movement issue in MM8, and turning Always Run does help but it's odd that you guys say it's in the MM7 GOG version, yet my retail jury-rigged MM7 installation does not have this problem. I have not installed MM7 off of GOG yet, but I do wonder if I installed it via-GOG rather than retail if I'd have the problem.

Would anyone like me to try? Perhaps it's a GOG-isolated issue?

Greetings.

Thanks for the info jackmix69 I did not know that in the MM8 install directory was the "Mm8-Setup.exe". Putting on "Hardware Acceleration 3d" solved both problems for me, I still having a white flash each 30 seconds but is perfectly playable.

Thanks for your help guys, and I hope that you found a soution to the weird movement.

Glad to hear your game is playable now, and you're welcome. Have fun!
