Thanks for the link. Nowhere near as big as Daggerfall's, it looks like. Which is a huge relief.

Man bsunholy, now you've complicated everything. LOL
My favorite would be 4-5 though I've never completely finished it yet. It just has an addicting gameplay I feel I can always pick up a play at any time in short spurts or for long hours. I have save games I've been working on for many months. Following Xeen I'd say it's a tie between 6 and 1. MM6 is fantastic and just as addicting as Xeen but I love 1 because of it's somewhat smaller size, simple gameplay and variety. MM1 is one of the greatest jewels of 80's RPG's in my opinion.

MMXAlamar: Don't forget that MM1 and MM2 were made in a completely different era. MM1 was finished in '86 and MM2 in '89. There really weren't many RPGs out there back then and the games were brand new, even revolutionary for the time period.
Lol. I'll never forget that ;)

I remember buying MM1 when it came out. I had a Commodore 64, and I lustily stared at the box and map while I loaded it up. Unfortunately, I never did get it to work on my C64.

Still, playing them now, I just can't get past the graphics. I do plan to conquer them eventually, but they keep slipping further down my list as I get my hands on other titles.

I should also add that I'm pretty forgiving of MM9. The graphics are miserable, and it's not about engine or processing power. The design of the characters and monsters is amateurish. I defy anyone not to laugh when they encounter those first skeletons.

However, once you get going in MM9, you can see the spirit of Might and Magic in it. It just came along at a time when 3D technology wasn't ready for an epic RPG on that type of budget.

I do hope we get a true MM10 one day. The interest in the brand is there, HoMM6 and the other tangential titles show that.

I'd even stomach a reboot of the series if it brought forth a good RPG.

bsunholy: rank the series like this from best to worst.
7
6

4
3
9

I agree. 9 could be very good with a good further patching, and would then be better than the 4, or even better than 6.

The closest thing we got so far was the Dark messiah of M&M by Arkane studios (Of Arx Fatalis fame) seeing how they have a fondness for old school RPGs, there might be hope of an actual sequel one day..If it wern't for the Heroes of M&M series I would wager that we would've seen one already, but unfortunately the series went to consoles to die in obscurity..
I think 6 is my favorite in terms of gameplay and dungeon design, although the Xeen games have some of my favorite spritework ever, and it definitely has this really fascinating atmosphere.
It is really a tough choice as I enjoy almost all of them for different reasons. If it was posed as a "desert island/make up your damn mind!" kinda question I would have to go with MM3. It is the perfect realization of the first two titles and not quite as cluttered as MM4-5. I consider MM6+ to be almost a different franchise altogether but I still enjoyed MM6-8.
