Hello, recently i started playing Book one and after playing half of the game i encountered particular bug (might be 2 separate bugs, but happening simultaniously)
Some of my characters looses all the gems upon reaching 255, but not the one in the slot 5. And at the same time as i was exploring B2 forest searching for ravens stronghold i encounter few cyclops, locust plagues and some other variety of local fauna, and games locks up, its still runing, But the only input working is now F7 which works as atack, and F8 to cast spells, but no other button on keyboard works. It happened 2 times in a row already and both times after gem owerflow transpired. If these 2 events are releated, or just a coincidence, i have no idea.
Thanks in advance

I am also playing MM1 right now and both my Cleric and Sorcerer have reached 255 gems (and over). My Cleric currently has 263 and my Sorcerer 293. I have not run into the bug at all.

Let me ask you, has the bug happened due to trading your gems, or also by collecting them? Meaning, have you traded gems from other party members which has brought you over 255 and then it goes to 0? I have heard that be a bug in the past. However, if you pick them up (as treasure) I have heard it does not cause the issue.

Also, try using 'Gather'. I believe I remember reading in one of the other threads the gems are still there, and if you gather them, they will come back. But I haven't tried it myself (as I haven't had the problem) so I can't relate from experience.

As for the locking up in B2, I have had some glitches so far in the game where it has locked up for me. Usually when I have tried to Alt+Q in combat. But one time it did lock when trying to Alt+Q outside when exploring. But nothing has happened what you have described, my locking up has locked the game up 100%, nothing has worked. Hopefully it is not something that happens with me, as I will be exploring B-2 next.

Edit: I found this on another thread:

""yes testing confirmed that weird overflow happens when trading only. Finding gems in the wild works ok.
Trading is strange. When giving gems to someone with less than 255, it overflows if it reaches 255. When giving gems to someone who is already above 255, everything seems ok. But... if you give over 255 gems, he the receiver gets only the "overflowed" amount (mod 255)..."

What they mean by overflow is it goes to 0.

Well, probbably thats the case, as i am sure that second time it happened i was trading gems, not sure about first time. but most likely i just noticed it later.
Oh well, its not like gems are rare or something, even if gather wont work plenty of monsters drop them.
What concerns me is locking up, and its not an DOSbox issue i think, as i can plearly pause-unpause emulator, change cycles count and go into mapper menu. Its just that in game i get no response except for F7 and F8
Yes, the gem issue is a known bug. Not sure about the lockup.

mod 256 actually. So instead of 260, you get 4.

(EDIT: mod 256, not 255)

Well, good to know if I ever get around to actually playing this game. (I still have yet to play MM1 despite enjoying MM2-5.)

To see if I understand what's going on here, let me make a prediction:
* If a character is holding 511 gems and you trade that character 1 more gem, the character will have 256 gems. Is that correct?

(Also, to be clear we're talking about the DOS version available on GOG, right? Other versions may have different bugs (like the NES version's bugs that make Locust Plagues unfair or can transform items).)

No. 512.

From reading the older posts on the bug, it sounds like if you trade to those with at least 255 gems, you are fine. And of course you don’t want to drop below that number because then you have find more in treasure to bring you back up over 255 or you use the Share command.
Also, read post 7 and 8 here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/might_and_magic_series/gem_transfering_bug_in_mm1/post7

There might be more to this than what I originally tested.
Yeah, I brought up earlier in this thread about trying the Gather command to see if he got his gems back, as I remember reading post #7 (that you just linked).

I do remember post 8 from before, but it was the only time I've seen it mentioned, so was hoping that he was maybe wrong. Hope what he says is not the case (there is a limit on gems).

For anyone who has played late in the game/beaten it, do you remember the amount of gems you gained? Did it coincide with what post #8 said in the link above?

I would think having a max of 512 gems, especially for a Sorcerer, would definitely be noticeable with how quickly a Sorcerer bleeds gems for those higher level spells. Same with Cleric, but may not be as noticeable as it appears the max amount that can be carried is higher (1023 to 512).

By the way, I mentioned it in the thread but I'll post it again, even with this bug there is never a shortage of gems. You might find yourself with 0 gems because of it before a battle, but it's very easy to just additional ones. So I wouldn't worry about it all that much.
