So I think I'm going to play through MM 3 all the way, and I just have a few questions about mapping. First off, is it as neccessary in MM 1/2? Because I find it difficult to find a proper way to map the overworld. With the Mountaineer and pathfinding skills, there are almost no impassable barriers on the overworld, so I can't just draw lines of the grid as I did for MM 1/2. Maybe if I could see some examples of home-made maps I could get a better feel for it.

To be honest, since automap is there, I never bothered mapping MM2 onwards at all. Especially with the new engine of 3-5 I don't see the point.

So they are completely playable without mapping? I just don't want to miss anything important. It still comes down to, MM 3 is hard to map at all.
Yes. Just look at the automap any time you want.
If you have a sorcerer in your starting party you have the mapping skill from the start, if not you can buy it in the starting town. Drawing your own maps definitely isn't necessary, noting the map coordinates of some locations you'll want to return later can be useful.
You can print out the world map which comes with game, it very accurate.

I've just started on MM3 (having finished MM1 and 2) and I've not found any need to map MM3, however I've been taking notes of interesting locations, messages etc. that I might need (on the PC rather than writing them down!).
