I have reached Portsmith and exploring the city, on crossroads, I meet this message. Besides, my male characters are deprived of most of their hit points.

Explanations? How can I prevent that from occuring anymore?

I should have been more attentive. A similar question has been posted a year ago. Notwithstanding, is not there a way except switching gender (sounds awful!) and avoiding this location?

Or, how have you solved this hindrance by yourself?

Switching gender is the most sure-fire way of dealing with it... you have to be careful and take only your male characters when you go to switch, otherwise you'll turn your women into men also. Having everyone be female is a great boon for a certain encounter in Portsmith. Remember that you can always go back and switch genders again later.

If you'd rather not switch genders, you can try to get around using the "jump" spell to skip over those squares, but since they are at crossroads you will need to step on them sometimes in order to turn. Later on, when you get the teleport spell, you can use that to get around without ever stepping on those squares.

I just stepped on those squares and healed/rested on the the "off" squares. Actually, once you have it all mapped, there's really only a couple of those male-draining squares that you absolutely have to step on if you've got male characters. So it's not that big of a deal (imho).
Thank you both very much. Also, do you see any sense in this mechanism? What does it mean at all?

It's just one of several clues as to what's going on in Portsmith. Also, it makes the game more difficult, so it's just part of the challenge. And finally, it's a goofy D&D trope to have some kind of trap that only affects certain kinds of characters.
