I've never played any MM game before, so I don't really know anything about the game at all. However, the release of the bundle was met with an amount of enthusiasm that piqued my interest.
There is one core mechanic that is very unclear to me: combat.
Is it turn based or real-time? And if it's real-time, how is the pacing? How does it compare to Stonekeep and Ishar? (What I've seen of MM reminds me of those).

It is real-time, but at least in MM6 (I didn't play older MM games yet) you can enter turn-based mode when you press enter.
In real-time it is quite fast, which is good when you fight against weaker enemies (so you just kill them fast), when against stronger enemy or when you are overwhelmed, then turn-based mode comes in handy.

Ehhh, so you mean that you can choose to play the battles in these games in turn based mode if you wish?
In MM6 yes, you can. As I have said before, I didn't play MM 1-5 yet, so there it doesn't have to be the same way.
MM1 thru 5 are all turn based, though in MM1&2 you will not see enemies until you encounter them at 'random' . MM3, 4 & 5 you can see them on the *game screen and plan things out a little (There is not a lot of strategy involved, but the option to take advantage of the environment is there).
While MM6 is real time, but you can jump onto turn based mode for combat at any point, there's no good reason to do so when not fighting and eventually you become powerful enough to hold down the attack key and just mow everything down while walking along an area :)
edit:*map's not the best word until MM6, You can see enemies on the screen when they are in your field of view.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I wanted to know. I think I'll like the games.
Klaymen, thanks for answering as well (+1 =) )
Great, thanks.
No problem. Xeen (and MM3 to a degree) and MM6 are probably the easiest to jump right into. I do recommend them all though if you like older RPGs :)
*just a note, I had to correct the use of the word 'map'. But as enemies move in steps on the game grid, it's easy to keep track of their location.
