For MM1

The less characters I have in my party, do I still get the same amount of total gold after battle, but equally divided? Or do I get less?

Same amount, equally divided. Same for gems.

Luckily MM2 did away with this and just had a common pool.

Actually, I am pretty sure MM2 has separate gold and gams per character.

Furthermore, hirelings can't carry gold, which prevents them from using the gold->experience fountain. (The space in the stat screen where gold would be is replaced with the per-day cost of the hireling, which is really just an extra fee to pay when resting; if you never rest with a hireling, you can avoid this cost.)

MM3, on the other hand, did switch to a common pool for both gold and gems.

I did a quick check and it seems you're right. My memory was playing tricks on me. The common pool wasn't introduced till MM3.
