Hi there,

I've seen there's a kind of port available for M&MVIII via the porting team:
http://portingteam.com/files/file/1267-might-and-magic-8/

I was wondering whether the GOG version works with this.
Did anyone try this on their mac osx?

Thanks a lot in advance!
Kind regards

I haven't tried any of The Porting Team's wrappers, mainly because the links to the vast majority of them seem to be broken, but I've purchased and tested M&M 6-9 (I just got M&M IX just now actually) for use on my Mac (GMA 950 MacBook, 10.6.8). In my testing and experience, they all work very well in CrossOver, and in Wineskin.
Thanks for the reply, that's good news. But I have no idea how wineskin or something like that works :-) How does one install gog games using that tool?

Edit: awesome I got it working using wineskin and I created a wrapper myself using winery. The only problem I have is that my mouse pointer disappears when I go into the main game... On the main screen I still have one, but after that it's gone. Everything else works perfectly, except for the music.

Any tips?

I have a detailed step-by-step tutorial on using Wineskin here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gog_games_on_mac_os_x_a_how_to/post6 0 - that will walk you through installing any GOG game (that is known to run in WINE) on your Mac through Wineskin. A couple of posts up I've done something similar for CrossOver. The first thing I'd try with the disappearing mouse cursor would be to go to Set Screen Options in Wineskin (right-click and go to "Show Package Contents" in your wrapper) and turn off "Decorate Windows". If that doesn't work, go back to Wineskin and go to Advanced > Tools > Change Engine Used and change your WINE engine to a different version (you'll have to install it first in Wineskin Winery). I use WS8Wine1.5.1 with M&M 6, 7, and 8 on my Mac. My Wineskin tutorial describes how to install different versions of WINE with Wineskin Winery. Oh yes, and since M&M 6-8 use the same graphics engine, you can also buy M&M 7, and the huge M&M 1-6 pack, and play all of them on your Mac, since M&M 1-5 also work on your Mac through Boxer (a well-known Mac-specific distro of DOSBox).

Edit: I went back and did some more testing on my install of M&M 8, and something must have happened to my system, because it was totally broken on WS8Wine1.5.1. I changed it to WS8Wine1.4 and the game works perfectly now.

I indeed also tried reverting to 1.4 but that did not help. 1.3 doesn't startup at all (some crash in MM8.exe). I did your trick of unticking "decorating windows" and it works! Wow, thank you very much!

Too bad the music does not seem to work.
Still great though, thanks again!

Glad I could help! As it turned out, it was a one-time glitch and the game does work in 1.5.1 as well as 1.4 (in 1.5.13 I saw the disappearing cursor bug you mentioned). If you're on Lion you also need to set ddr=gdi in Winetricks to get the game working in fullscreen. This unfortunately means you need to disable 3D hardware acceleration unless you run it in a virtual desktop.

On my current system (2006 MacBook Pro/Radeon X1600, 10.7.5) the game runs and looks very nice, even without 3D acceleration, in fullscreen using 1.5.1. Funny how M&M9 looks graphically worse than M&M8 even though it uses the same engine technology as games like NOLF, AvP, Shogo, and Blood 2 (Lithtech 1.5).

Oh yes, and I'd highly recommend installing the unofficial patches for it by GreyFace, available here: https://sites.google.com/site/sergroj/mm
Hey guys,

MM VI is causing me some issues: basically the game does launch, but the movies do not play and (even worse) there is a constant flickering on the top of the screen.

basically I tried everything you guys suggested to no avail:

1) Turned off "decorate windows"
2) Changed version of wrapper: 1.3, 1.4, 1.5. - nothing works (game would not even launch)
3) Tried changing resolution with winecgf)

So, I was hoping you could guide towards a solution? How can I stop this darn screen flickering and get to the goblin killin??

thanks a bunch!
