I recently started playing Might and Magic 3. The game itself seems to be working great, but the resolution is funky. In the windowed size, I measured it to be 640x400 resolution. In full screen, there are not only bars on the left and right as expected, but one along the bottom as well.

How do I fix this?

Thanks!
The easiest way is probably to adjust the DOSBox settings so you play in a larger window. The fullscreen issue might be related to your graphics card scaling, but it will be harder to fix. Is playing in a bigger window OK?

If so, you should find the configuration file for MM3. It should be in your install directory, and is probably called dosboxmm3.conf, or something like that. Save a backup copy of the file, then open it in a text editor and look for the line that says "windowresolution=original". Change that to any resolution you like, for example "windowresolution=1024x768". The window will now be larger. You can also get the game to start in a window by changing the line "fullscreen=true" to "fullscreen=false".

I like to play the early MM games in large windows, which fill most of my screen but still let me easily switch to the PDF manual or a text file for taking notes.

If you really want to get fullscreen working properly, check your graphics card settings for scaling options. You want to enable scaling but preserve aspect ratio, if possible. Those settings can be finicky though.
That is good to know. The game's resolution should be 640x480 though, shouldn't it? I have never heard of anything that is 640x400. Full screen mode is currently active but it is scaling off of 640x400.

The config file has fullresolution set to "original" but I think "original" isn't working right, basically.

Your method sounds pretty good for setting up the game in a large windows instead of going totally full screen. I use a couple websites constantly for item and spell info and that would make it even easier to do so.

<edit> I found an aspect ratio setting in there that fixed my main problem. Thanks for the info on the config. I would still like to know about the aero compatibility thing if anybody knows.

I have also noticed that my desktop turns off aero settings when I run the game, apparently for compatibility reasons. Is there an option in the config to make that unnecessary as well?
