I start the game with no issues, I start a new game see the movie and then the scene where the cops get up, the red cop says "What's this smell?" the tank next to him blows up and the camera stays stuck there. No HUD or anything, but I seem to be able to control my character because despite the camera being stuck there and not being able to see anything other the the floor, when I press keys I hear him walking and doing stuff.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Exactly same problem here.
Getting tired of buying non-working games from gog, then having to jump through hoops to make them work

Use the overall setup method from this thread http://www.gog.com/forum/messiah/messiah_composite_quick_start_thread and hopefully it will just work for you. I never had any problems with my controls but maybe this will fix whatever's causing your problem.
