I just started playing MDK and it seems fun. Just to make sure I don't miss out on anything:

1. I take it the game is so old-school or minimalistic that it comes without an in-game introduction about what's going on and what are your objectives (no intro, no cutscenes) and requires you to read the manual if you want to know about these things?

2. Am I right in assuming that you can get hopelessly stuck if you waste your resources on the wrong targets or fail to hit the right ones before they're exhausted? It seems there are several situations where you're required to use something specific in order to move on, e.g. an item or a specific type of ammunition, and if you use the item in the wrong place or run out of that ammunition, you're stuck and have to reload?

(I know the most simple answer is probably RTFM but something nicer would be appreciated! ;) )

1) Pretty much. It's basically aliens attack Earth and it's up to you to stop them. But it has a sense of humour about it, so it's worth looking up.
Wikipedia has a summary.

2) No. If you run out of / misuse a necessary item, another will be airdropped in.
Thanks!

Yeah, sorry. I asked if (2.) applied to ammuniton like mortar and grenades, too, when they are required to move on but I figured that must be the case because you wrote "run out".

Btw, is is normal that occasionally some surfaces are plain-colored without textures (black, brown, grey, see screenshot) or is that an indication that something's wrong with my graphic mode/card?

It's okay, I remember playing it back in '98 and it was like that.
