Moo2 is definitely better in every aspect. Especially the horde fleets of MOO is fixed in the MOO2. I was fed up with the endless fleets without any limits.
MoO2 is definitely the more popular game, but I prefer MoO1. It seems to me that MoO2 makes things a lot more complicated but not always to the benefit of the overall design.
I definitely prefer MOO1. It feels more like a refined strategic game, whereas MOO2 is less about typical 4X play and more about coming up with broken custom race/tech combos. MOO1 is Civilization in space, MOO2 is Magic the Gathering in space.
2 is probably more popular. It's a more complex game, the AI isn't quite so inept, but it quickly turns into a building fest where all you do is build improvements in your colonies and nothing else. A little too much micro management for me. Also the high score thing is too easy to manipulate with how the bonuses are done.

1 is really easy to pick up and just play. It's one of those one more turn kinda things. The only issue with it is first the AI is downright awful. You can abuse the heck out of them with repulsor beams, planetary shields, etc. And it's sometimes incredibly shallow. You might be humming along have a few planets and then randomly a vote happens and you win it, gg game over after 25 minutes. And sometimes the vote doesn't go your way and it turns into total war far too early. But it's a really easy game to play and get into, I prefer it for the simplicity.
Hi Everyone
my question is not for the feint-hearted. I have the CD version of MOO3. I downloaded the patch 1.2.5 and a lot of mods. I must be totally inept because I cant get any of them to work even though I tried to extract them to the original MOO3 file. I am wondering if someone....a very patient someone...would walk me through where to place these files when I extract them. Thank you for your consideration.

You probably meant to start a new thread instead of posting in this one.

JeCy: i found the game in the last few years.. Played Moo1, really found it addictive. It is just pure and simple in the classic pixel design, but the game play is deep and fun.

I barely played the second, but it seems more graphical, i really can't say more than that. I will play eventually, but i need to spend another 100 hours or soo on the first before i even think about moving on.
I think it's a personal preference... I think the second version is best. MOO3 was a big flop. I tried it and did not like it at all. I'm still playing version 2 after what, 25 years +? Its a great game if you don't care about graphics and prefer tactical games.
There are legitimate reasons to love both 1 and 2. I can't tell you how many hours I've poured into both over the last few decades... but MoO2 is the one game I own that has been installed on every single machine I've ever owned. I've played it more than any other game, ever. The depth and replayability never NEVER gets old. The long-term fun comes in trying to win with a variety of crazy custom alien builds or penalties. You ain't nuthin' if you can't win as an uncreative, repulsive race, ha ha ha!

Of course, 3 stunk like a house made of excrement, stuffed with dead dogs, and set on fire.

Moo2 is the game that turned me from a console gamer to a PC gamer.

Never played the first one.

I enjoyed the third one but the It just lacked the feeling of owning your destiny. Most of all the space combat was very sloppy, you were better off automating most battles for victory. Oh the missiles , so many missiles got old =/

In my opinion, The MOO and X-com series were the best games ever to be developed.

In this past week I've found myself taking the time to play MOO2 again and I got so hooked I've developed a case of mouse arm. This game is infinitely replayable. You can really get into the fantasy of shaping a unique space faring species because there are so many ways to advance your technological expertise, to fight and conquer (or exterminate) your rivals and to set up a working infrastructure and economy.

I honestly think the game is timeless. It will not be any less enjoyable another 10 years from now. Did time travelling game developers craft this game to mid-90's computer restrictions and leave it as a unique world treasure to enrich the present and future for all eternity?
I bought the two games from GOG with the expectation that i'd be playing MoO2. I heard it was great years ago, but I never bought it. I had enjoyed MoO1 back then, though.

But when I got the GOG games and loaded MoO2, I was a little put off by the small screen and the extra complexity and need for micromanagement. So I decided to play MoO1 for old times' sake and to remind myself what it was like. It looked kinda hokey at first, but once I warmed up to it, I started liking it--and then loving it.

I've kept trying to get into MoO2, but so far I haven't been able to. I've played ten or twelve times and even won a couple games. I bought the strategy guidebook and read that. I just can't be bothered to babysit all my colonies, so I end up using Autobuild a lot. I was also so totally turned off by tactical combat that I switched that off permanently; it's way too fussy and time-consuming. Lately I want to switch off the Antarean attacks too, because I'm getting tired of losing colonies.

But it's simpler to just play MoO1 instead. There's very little about that game that I don't like. Instead of going into the details, I'll just recommend this Web site:

MoO2 is surely more popular. But some of us still prefer MoO1.

I've got 1 and 2 here. I played 1 way back, before I got 2. Since getting both back here, I've not fired up 1.

The design limit in 1 is too forced for me, and factories and refitting them bugged me. That said, I do like the purity of the race design themes in 1 over the grab-bag in 2.

But in any case, the game's are here for fun. Folks get fun different ways.

I have played both games since they originally came out. I personally prefer MoO II. I find the constant readjusting of the individual planetary sliders in the original game to be tedious. However, I have not found a second game that I like as well as the original version, so I use the original version as a change of pace from the the second one..
To the Topic of "Which Game is most popular", depends upon When you were 1st introduced to them.

They are both very popular for the early 4x TBS game type players. The younger players are more used to FPS and RTS so they complain about being "irritated" by having to manager their build ques or adjust sliders. And to the Poster that complained about MoO2 tactical combat my response is "Really???"

Neither of these 1st 2 MoO are micro management "hells" by any means or stretch of the imagination, and Tactical Combat is what made these games popular to begin with.

Now Gog's versions are used thru Dosbox and you do need to learn some basic Dosbox procedures.

OT, I actually like All the MoO games including III and the new one in EA. But then I'm old school 4X TBS player and don't care for FPS games at all. I played tons of Cowboys and Indians while growing up. ;)
