Evening sirs,
Currently enjoying MoO1 a lot. I generally play hard or impossible (admittedly success rate for hard is way and above impossible) and I have no real penchant for races (though tend to avoid silicoids, humans and psilons); however, I noticed a bit of a theme to my play and I'm looking for alternative routes.
N.B. I'm not looking for a 'super-build' that wins every-time. Just an alternative that stands a chance of working.
Currently, I tend to do a somewhat of a farmer's gambit - spread out as far as I can and then keep everyone onside as much as possible until I can build a decent enough fleet to fend off attacks/wipe the floor. If I'm losing the tech race (especially if Psilons are around) then I will swarm their planets to take the tech by force to get onto a more equal footing...
There are variations that have proven fun. Probably the most is not bothering to research at all and, using one of the more computer savvy races, steal and storm my way up the tech tree.
However, whenever I have tried to be aggressive early on, I do poorly. I know in the grand scheme of things playing nice till you're strong enough is a good way to go but I want to expand and become more flexible. I know it must be possible, I just don't seem to have found a good time or ship build type to go on the offensive.
Are there any tips or favourites builds to get out of the blocks early? Once again I stress I'm not hunting for a uber-procedure as I don't think they exist in the game. Just something...viable,
Any thoughts or alternative approaches gentlemen, or indeed, ladies?
On a completely unrelated note, I just finished a fun game where no one had any kind of bombs until Omega type...caused some surprising tension trying to blitz your way through the tech tree for any kind of bomb while keeping a worried eye on the enemy to see if they caught a breakthrough!
