IS there any way to fortify a unit within a city or anywhere, for that matter?
I, each turn, have to specify that i once again choose not to move the unit. It's a little exhausting..

It's been a while since I played, but I think if you press 'F', then the unit will fortify.

Being a CIV-fan that was the first thing i tried. No result.
It's the "patrol" button in the lower right corner (along with "done", "wait", build"). The patrol function makes the unit look greyed out and doesn't activate the unit every turn. If you want to activate it again you have to right click it on the map, then left click it in the little units window on the right. I don't think it offers any defensive bonus, but I'm not sure about that. I hope that helps!
