He's a wuss! He always gets killed! The only way he can ever live long enough to cast anything is to be on defense, meaning he's dead after the first attack. But just leaving him in a town behind walls seems a waste.

Does anyone ever use him?
Zaldron is one of the most useful heroes in my games.

1) He comes early, so he can develop a lot.
2) He's not a bad spellcaster (better than Valana or Rakir)
3) He's got the Sage bonus, very handy in the early game.
4) He's got two spells that are important if you don't play a Sorcery wizard: Counter Magic, Dispel Magic True. So he can protect other units and himself from nasty enemy spells.

Usage:
a) can sit in the fortress, helping greatly your casting power AND your research. Don't underestimate the power of fortress based wizard!
b) can be a part of main group. In that case I recommend equipping Zaldron with some items. I prefer shields as they give you a hidden +2 bonus against any type of ranged attack, including spells. Raising health may be also important, after that he will not be the 1st target.
Very good input. Thanks.

How can I raise his health? When I make items I only see ways to raise defense, and since Zaldron will never ever be in melee I wouldn't use that.

Health will increase automatically as he gains levels. And defense is very important, as it reduces (or completely eliminates) damage regardless of if that damage is in melee or ranged. Resistance is also important, as it provides a defense against magic attacks (such as enemy wizards throwing spells at him).
Zaldron is almost always the first hero I'm offered and I almost always accept him specifically for the bonuses to research and magic he confers. I would recommend two things: 1st, if it seems silly to keep him in the fortress instead of out slaying things, save before you enter combat and see how it goes. In some cases, the enemies will ignore him (especially early on when they're using spearmen or swordsmen) which allows him to add his own spells or ranged, magical attacks before hand-to-hand is joined. If he dies, reload and either leave him out of the fight or try different tactics. 2) cast buff spells on him early on, especially guardian wind, invisibility, stoneskin, or Holy Armor. It might cost you a bit of mana, but it pays off in the long run (especially invisibility because the enemy ranged units can't hit him while he dishes out punishment).
Zaldron is usually one of the first heroes I get too. Having casters at your capitol is useful because they add to your spell power so you can spend more mana per day
Zaldron is great for staying at your fortress helping you research and cast spells. He's not going to win many battles without assistance, though, unless you get him some powerful items. Get him early and if you start to fill up your hero roster, dismiss or kill him when he's outlived his usefulness.

He'll never outlive his usefulness. As he levels up, he'll contribute more and more to your research and spell skill. The only reason to bring him into battles though, is to give him experience quicker. So you can put him in your fortress to help him with spell-casting.

Spell skill is overall an underrated power. The only way to increase it, aside from having caster heroes guard your fortress, is to wait. It'll raise slowly over time. If you raise your skill staff you can make it raise more quickly, but you don't want to lower the research and mana staves. Well, the mana staff you can actually lower if you have Alchemy, as it's usually easier to simply make lots of money and convert it to mana.

However, spell skill can really turn the tides in battles. Let's say you have a single spearman unit in each of your cities, but a few books in life and decent spell skill. Well, now you can ward off most attacks by casting Invulnerability, Heroism and/or Healing on those spearmen!

Spell skill is amazing, but it's also pretty common among heroes. Zaldron just doesn't bring enough to the table to keep him once you can start summoning, rescuing, or attracting champion grade heroes. He may not be good enough to keep even once you can attract the higher quality non-champion heroes. He is, however, amazing at the start of the game - thus, I keep him. Later on, if I have use for more than 5 heroes, he's probably going to the bucket.

When I can fill all my six hero slots with champions and such, I've probably already achieved domination over the AI wizards. Lots of great stuff in the game comes too late into play to make a difference. Like having an army of six champions. Or Spell of Mastery. ;P
If you are going to keep him you need magic immunity invisibility or ressurrect if you are going to play on hard or impossible.
With equipment he rocks, counter magic without having sorcery books makes him the game saver at times.
Zaldron is actually quite valuable to your wizard over the long-haul. Not to repeat what others have already posted, but you can find more good info about Zaldron - and other heroes - at the following location:
