This game appears to be originally made (or simultaeously) for DOS, but the GOG version has only the Widnows .exe, I think... or is this supposed to work in DOSbox as well? (It has not when I tried it but i'm no expert) It's listed as fully dosbox compatible on the dosbox lists... Thanks!
wish I knew too. I liked better the DOS version...

Better? What's the difference? It's the same game, just for Windows 95 right? What's DOS got on that?

DOS version would run better on Windows 8, through DOSBOX. It's awful to play the Windows 95 version here. Same thing with Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

What breaks on Win8?

See, I still don't know what you guys are talking about. I have Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, and I haven't even had ONE problem. What exactly are you guys talking about? That's what I'm trying to figure out. So could you please elaborate? I legitimately want to know what all the problems are. :-)

Just "guy" not "guys".

I am equally curious. I'd like to know what the win8 issues are.

When you say "run better", what do you mean? See, I don't know what exactly the problem is. Could you please elaborate?

Thank you sir.

Well, tell you what. I have the Royal Edition in CD version. If it means so much to you, maybe I can send you the files, if that doesn't violate any terms of service with GOG. After all, you already purchased the game from GOG, and it's not like I'm just "giving" you the game, right?
Well forget that it runs better in Windows 8 or not.. It would be much better for mac compatible release if it were the dos version. Unfortunately, Gog hasn't taken to making releases through wineskin yet.

I actually bought the game cause I thought it was the dos version. Silly me :)

I think LOTR1 is the DOS version (at least my one is), so you can still play that. It's actually very good, despite its age.

Well, like I said, if you REALLY want the DOS version, I'll send you the files as you mentioned you did indeed purchase the game (I'm not just going to give them out for free to those who haven't purchased the game from GOG). I have Lords of the Realm: Royal Edition on CD. And yes, that includes Lords of the Realm CD edition (GOG's is the floppy disc version).

So, if you want the files, just ask. I'll .zip them to you.

If you could that would be fantastic! But in a general sense, the dos version has more use then just windows compatibility. :)

were there any other advantages of the cd edition over the floppy for lotr1?

Yes, the CD edition had Sound, Music, Voice acting, and more maps. Anyways, it doesn't seem like I can send you the files via PM, so I'm sending you my email address. Email me with whatever you want (spam account, disposable email, or whatever). I don't use or sell email addresses, and will delete yours as soon as I send the files.

EDIT:

As this was my first time sending something to someone ever, we found out email doesn't work very well. The 1.25 GB file size does not sit well with most Email Host Provider. So instead, we used Microsoft SkyDrive. That way, I can keep the files on a server, and never have to re-upload them. And, the downloader can download the files at their earliest or latest convenience. So for all those who do indeed want the original files, PM me, and I'll PM you back with the SkyDrive link for the files.

NOTE: I will not be giving these files out for free. You must have purchased the game, in the very lest, from GOG.

sorry about the delay. I'm not used to checkin here, and I'm for some reason not receiving emails telling me there are new replies =(

So, one thing that DOS version beats Win95 version for ANY Windows, actually, is the ability to play it in window mode - be it with DOSBOX or any other dos-emulator.

I've bought LOTR Royal Edition and LOTR 3, and I'm not much a fan of playing old games on full screen - specially since most of those games were not designed to run in resolutions different from 4:3.

I remember that besides the resolution, there were a few other weird things that happened when I ran LOTR 1 on Win8, but it's been so long that I can remember exactly the problems... if you really need, I'll run it again to see.

Matt, I'd like access to your Skydrive to download the DOS version, if you'd let me =) thanks for that!
