Hello there. It took awhile to finally find this game. I remember playing it when i was younger, but it was just a demo version. All i could remember was "easy to do" lol. I think one of the warrior units said it. Anyways, I wanted to click on LOTR link, but i accidently hit the link to LOM. Well, it brought back memories and i bought it without question.

Thats where you guys come in. I haven't played this game since the year it probably came out or before when they were in Beta (I feel old). Besides the storyline, It doesn't leave much of a tutorial when starting out. I started out as the chaos thief, It started off okay, defeated the lvl 1 hut; Then i attack another lvl 1 hut and got demolished. There was a guy flying on a butterfly who just killed everyone in my team. I'm like " THIS IS A LVL 1 HUT! HOW DID I DIE SO EASILY!!"

Anyways, any tips on how to approach this game would be helpful. I look at a few gamefaq guides...but i refuse to use the cheats just yet (lol).

I appreciate it!
The Pegasus in a lvl 1 Hut is a bug which must be fixed by subsequent LOM patch. You are barely able to beat it anyway.
A lot of tips can be found throughout the Internet, for example, at Gamefaqs.com.

My best advice is to get Lords Of Magic: Special Edition instead of classic LOM. You'll see why.

I got the special edition yesterday in which seems like the bug is still there.

I have look at gamefaq but i thought i would ask here for some tips that you have tried and failed or tried and triumph. Bring the community together for an easy post, or even get some people to play the game again to remind themselves.

I guess i will make a trip to youtube later.
This is very strange. I personally have never met the pegasi bug, because I started with LOMSE v3.01. Maybe google can help.

There are a few tips than I can remember from the original LOMSE. I hope these will help you somehow.
Well, when I played original unmodded LOMSE (without Ascension64's unofficial 3.02 patch or Mantera's GS5R3 Mod) I used to prefer Water for its overall balance and strong ranged units (Lizardmen Slingers).

Also, Order gameplay is very friendly to a beginner, due to its balanced champions. Order magic has strong buff spells, like Righteous Cause.

Fire will be the best for autocalculating the dungeons, but requires advanced micro-control in standard battles, just like Chaos, due to low defence of champions. These are hard faiths to play, especially on Hard difficulty.
Fire magic is highly offensive, with a few defensive spells.
Chaos magic is very strong, but it has a probability to work on you instead, like with Hand of Fate spell. This must be taken carefully.

Air melee units are weak in unmodded LOMSE. Eagles are barely useful (not speaking about multiplayer). The advantage of Air is flying ranged units which can fly over an impassable territory and shoot enemy units freely. Troll Cave encounter is very nice for this - you can level up your Thief champion very easy there.

Earth Warrior is the strongest warrior in the game, but he is vulnerable to ranged attacks. However, Earth warriors and infantry have increased melee resistance.
Earth must have a number of spells to deal with Air forces easier, like Earth Meld and Rocksling.

Life magic is nice vs. Death. Bless will turn Death creatures to a slowpoke sloppy beings. With this you will never fear Vampires and the lesser Death creatures. Life archers are also good because of their high range, but they are weak in constitution.
This is one of my favorite games of all time but there is a steep learning curve.

One very useful bit of advice is that you can select individual units in a squad by pressing ctrl and clicking on them. Normally when you click on a unit the whole squad gets selected. This is especially useful since you can have each unit defend itself when you issue the defend command. Normally if you have a whole squad selected and you use the defense command on one member, the other members will automatically attack whichever enemies are harming that one unit. By have each member defend himself you can bottleneck your enemies while you archers are flankers take them down.

Only use Aimed Missile on fast moving targets or one heavily armoured target. It increases your damage and accuracy, but great reduces your firing rate. It is typically better to have a lot of missiles hitting an enemy for less damage because each hit causes a momentary pause. Hit them enough times and those pauses add up to a near paralyzing effect that prevents them from attacking or moving.

Make extensive use of scouts. You can have scouts run up to every structure you find and then retreat. This allows you to see the level of the encounter to mark it for later conquest.

This one should be rather obvious, but you should liberate your Great Temple within the first couple of turns. Not only do you gain 2 new champions and a magic item, but it allows you to put followers in your capital to start generating income.

Don't forget to rest between battles. Units heal much faster when inside of a structure, especially if they haven't moved. Squads can even revive dead members so long as one of them is still alive.

I hope these help to get your started.
