This game starts off looking like a champion, with a classic RPG style and interesting graphics and characters (like Leonardo da Vinci) which quickly becomes a lonely, drab, brown-toned clickfest. I can't imagine why its rating is so high here.

I kind of feel the same but there is a huuuge difference between the rating from people who played it on original release and the rating from people trying it for the first time. I can definately see this game being a refreshing RPG back in the days but having tried it for the first time this week I feel a bit unsatisfied.

But again I thank GOG for their work on bringing back old games, not always so good :)
There really doesn't seem to be anything expectional about it other than the setting of the game. The gameplay is the weakest link of the game.
I think what kills it for most people is that after Barcelona, the game world offers very little except the linear approach to the game's main focus, ie the Relic and the start of the war. There is almost no areas for the player to go and buff up, gather stuff to sell, or just to explore. There are almost no random encounters (except for the rare off course crystal events) so the game sort of demands that you follow its script. That is, either you move on to the next quest, whether you want to or not, or else you can't play, period. This game had been compared to Fallout, but in FO, you can literally ignore the quests for as long as you want and go about your business killing, buying, and selling. All the while, you're leveling up and getting into a comfortable position to reenter the quest queue whenever you feel you're ready. Lionheart doesn't allow for that, which IMHO is what makes players hate it.
I played through it around the time it came out, I even got the extra special disc in it's own seperate box(!).

I was surprised to see it for sell on this site when I first looked around at all the games. When I played it when it first came out, I didn't find it to be a great game, or a "good olde game" as some would say around here.

It actually says "one of the greatest, if often overlooked, rpgs of all time!" on the game page. Which i find way out there! Of course opinions differ and some may actually think the game is one of the greats, but I didn't think so when it came out.

I gave away the boxed version I had years and years ago. I did buy it again on this site, not because it's one of my favourites, but because they don't make games like they use to anymore, so even the older ones I wasn't in love with I'd still buy. I miss these types of isometric 2d games, what can I say.
