I get this message when trying to start the program.

"Thus application had failed to start because d3dx9_43.dll was not found."

Could someone tell me what to do to fix this?

Windows 7? It doesn't come with dx9 by default or something, which some games need/require.
Try running the dx runtime installer: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35
