You are right, i only said that rogues are obselete in terms of powergaming. The OP asked to discuss power gaming strategies so: A fighter could do better in melee fights then a rogue i think. With a little effort and good equip they can become quite good supporters for the party. In most older rpgsystems rogues are only for disarming and unlocking, or for the occasional backstab. In grimrock they have the job of ranged attackers are second row fighters with their ranged melee attack.

Have a nice day

Porkdish: Do spears have a related skill? I finally went back to the start to make my own party and I can't seem to find one.

I'm guessing rogues become more important later for evading certain traps or magic damage? Maybe ranged weapons fire faster? Otherwise I can see the plus side to dropping a rogue for another mage... the lure of maxing out spell schools faster is tempting but then there's that fiddly spell casting interface. 2x that is not tempting.

Be nice if the hard mode added attacks of opportunity, maybe a half strength blow, anything to put a bit more risk on circle strafing beyond accidentally running into a dead end/trap. Its a bit easy to strafe & turn for free hits.
Spears have no related skill. Damage or hitrate does not increase when skilling in a rogue or warrior weapon categorie. But spears are only pointy sticks, so they are usefull for mages to make body exercises from the backrow.

You can prememorize spells and unleash them with rightclick on the spell button. I am most pleased to not have a skillbar like in 10001 clones of The-Game-not-to-be-spoken-of since 2007 :).

That's curious, but if anybody played Bloodwich (better in Amiga than PC, the port was a little flimsy) the strategies and role of the rogue was very similar.
In fact, LoG has a 'feeling' very similar to Bloodwich, which was my first CRPG.

I agree with the loving no shortcut bar, but would it kill them to respect the left/right mouse button rules they use for all other weapons - with spells. Let me select runes with the left button and cast with the right, suddenly you don't need that silly cast button that just invites accidental rune clicks.

Maybe replace the cast button with a 'clear' button... and remember what spell I've got queued up instead of forgetting every time. My warriors and rogues don't put their weapons away after every swing, even if they did they'd still require less clicking.
Abuse the real-time aspects of the game.
Abuse the hell out of it.

Learn to circle your opponents and learn their quirks. Always try to fight in open areas, especially if fighting multiple non-ranged combatants. If fighting multiple ranged opponents, try to find areas where you can circle around corners and play peek-a-boo with them. Whatever you do, do not engage ranged opponents of any kind head-on in melee; you won't be able to dodge their shots and they will destroy you.

When circling opponents in melee, try to wait for them to turn and move into a new square adjacent to you, at which point you hit them and retreat into another adjacent square before they can turn to hit you.

Always prioritize your melee combatants in combat, over spells. If it costs you getting hit even once because you were distracted by selecting runes, it wasn't worth it. Focus on getting a single spell in, and other than that just make sure that your mage has a throwing weapon to get some hits in when you don't have time to cast spells (or the Energy to spare).

And by level 5, you'll either have thrown in the towel, or learn to deeply treasure the times when you still meet Skeletal Legionnaires. Whenever I see them now, I just feel "Woo! Free XP!".

Almost every opponent has a certain bane tactic to it. A lot of opponents must simply be strafed. Others are very easy to fool into situations where they can't do anything. I think I've only met 1 kind of opponent that I had enormous problems with, outside of mixed-unit group combat, which will likely ALWAYS be a problem.

Fighting Spiders and those shooting fungi at the same time.. I did not enjoy that.

Yeah, I just got to the fourth level, and I let out a sigh of relief when I see the skeletons. Man those spiders, and blobs of green slime can be a pain in the ass. Oh well, If I ever get in real trouble, I back track to a closable door and just cheese the shit out of all the enemies. Basically I open the door, get a single attack off, and then quickly shut it. I normally feel bad for doing such exploiting strategies but in games like this where the difficulty is much higher, I wont even hesitate to trick the AI.
