My game seems to only starts in software rendering mode. D3D mode isn't even listed. I guess I'll try on the old Win98 PC, just to be sure, but I think it might simply be a limitation of the GOG release - perhaps they couldn't make D3D play nice with the newer systems.

Of cours, if anyone managed to run in D3D mode, then I guess it's my problem.

Do you have an ATI graphics board? If so try replacing atiumdag.dll in the game library with the file in this link. And then try again. This did it for me.
Deleting the file gives me these options: (attached picture)

Just to point out that it doesn't seem necessary to download anything as you can just remove the file (it never came with the game and is not necessary to run it).

Just a heads up for people who are weary of downloading random dll files.

On some systems it is necessary for the game not to crash. It's just that they seem to have put the wrong version with the game...
