Is there any way to turn off mouse dodging when in combat? Really hard to move in when Raziel just keeps flinging himself round my enemy instead of closing into striking distance...

I wish there was. Right now there isn't anything. Perhaps at some point some will patch it in (there are still many people 'hacking' the game, putting features in it).
The mouse controls are unfortunatly buggy. Besides to what you mentioned (at least I always experienced the bug), when after redefining the movement keys to WSAD, the W key worked in walking and sneaking modes, but not in combat and look around modes.
Your best bet is either using a keyboard only or a gamepad, which work fine.

Is it possible to use an xbox 360 pad? I would have thought the triggers would have caused a problem

Honestly, I'm not sure, but I think it should. If not 'out of the box' then definitely with some software support. My rumblepad 2 works without any problems.
