The chapter walkthroughs will tell you if there is a chest in the area and its solution. The maps are very specific.

You should look for them and walk everywhere initially instead of sticking to the road. Some ambushes are triggered off road as well.. Once you have explored an area, subsequent visits in future chapters don't require travelling off the road as there won't ever be anything new to find or experience. One exception is a quest you receive from a trapper in Dimwood Forest where a new chest can be found..

Owen can also cast spells to locate chests and other caches. You will receive an item in Romney that makes it easier.
