I bought the King's Quest IV-VI package today but unfortunately I wasn't aware the CD versions of V and VI that are offered here on GOG apparently don't give you the option to choose between voiceovers and text.. As a non-native speaker that's forcing a high concentration on me when playing and the quality of the voiceovers isn't particularly good either. In King's Quest VI I even get crackle, stuttering and weird noise interferences (not sure if that's due to Vista or DOSBox). Besides, the "Alexander does this, Alexander does that" chatter makes me feel like I'm watching a movie with audio commentary for blind people. :D

I wish I had read this before ...

Is there really no way to turn the text back on? Not even in KQ VI? Judging from screenshots on the net, that one had quite nice text boxes with initials reminiscent of fairy tale chapters. :(

You can play KQ6 through ScummVM's daily build

http://scummvm.org/downloads/#daily

Through the ScummVM GUI, go to the game's audio options and select Subtitles. This will allow you to play the game with just text and no voice over's.

Right now there is no way to do this with KQ5.

I currently have ScummVM 0.10.0 installed on my computer, what exactly are those daily builds? The most recent version of ScummVM? Or something entirely different? Do I have to de-install 0.10.0 and re-install the most recent version of ScummVM or can I somehow update it or install the new version over the old one? How would I go about setting KQ VI up to work with ScummVM? Do you have a link with instructions for dummies? ;)

Thanks for your help!

The daily builds are the latest version of ScummVM. Yes, you can just install it over your existing one. Once you installed it, launch ScummVM.exe. When the GUI (graphic user interface) comes up, click on Add Game. Then Browse to the folder that you installed GOG's KQ6. Probably located under something like "Program Files\GOG.com\KQ46\KQ6". Or something close to that. Once the game is added in the GUI, highlight the game, then click on "Edit Game". Click on the Audio tab, then enable Subtitles.

Whoops, I just realized there is an in-game option in KQ6 to switch between Speech and Text ... Did I overlook it before? Regardless, the tip to use ScummVM was spot on. The intro video runs much more smoothly and I don't get any kind of noise interferences anymore. Thanks a lot! :)
Awesome :) I didn't know if it was in GOG's version to just click from speech to text. From previous posts I assumed it wasn't. But glad to hear that ScummVM fixed your other probs too.
I always disliked the fact that the CD version of King's Quest V didn't have a text+speech option. Not being a native English speaker myself, I like to be able to read what the characters are saying but I also enjoy hearing the lines spoken by the actors.
I understand there is no way to put speech + subtitles in KQ6 :( that's too bad, i'm not a native english too and i wanted to play i'm used to play adventures, with speech+subtitles
It's been 4 years since the last post on this topic.
I recently got KQ5 via gog. I can't understand what that silly owl says at all. There is no subtitles button.
Maybe there's a new way to get over this annoyance?

Actually ScummVM patches King's Quest 6, so that speech + subtitles at the same time are available as an option.

The same can't be done to King's Quest 5, because subtitles/text is not included at all inside the talkie-version.
Google for the script for King's Quest 5. It may be of help to decipher the most abominable phrases spoken by owl or bee queen.
