So, I bought the Kings Quest games, hoping to play them on my Mac. I downloaded two emulators, Boxer and Winebottler, but neither will open the game and allow me to play. I'm not sure if it installed or not at this point. Boxer does nothing. Wine starts launching the game and then stops and disappears, or gives an error message.

I am actually on a 10.5.8 mac, not a 10.6, and I'm wondering if that's the problem, and if updating my OS will help. Or if, despite the emulators, Kings Quest simply won't work on a mac at all, and I'll need to eat that $10.

Appreciate any help.

King's Quest works fine here using Boxer. I'm on OS X 10.8.3. I've been using Boxer since 10.6 though.

I installed the files on XP, then moved them to OS X. This was before GOG was offering some of it's games on OS X though.

Not sure if that's much help.
I just purchased KQ 7 & 8. I am not computer savvy. I wondered if someone could walk me thru game installation and how to start playing.
Don't have a Mac but assuming you can extract the game files or run the installer through Winebottle (really just Wine) KQ 1-6 will work in the OS X port of ScummVM. KQ7 will have to be run in DOSBox.

You're out of luck with Mask of Eternity (KQ8) since Wine crashes trying to load a saved game and no one has figured out the compatibility fix Microsoft added with Win XP (the MapViewOfFile api gets patched on the fly to avoid the crash that happens on Win 2000 and later).
