I know the music in this is rather..well..secondary compared to the rest of the game.
But it is a problem to me, whenever I play the game, it runs perfectly. Aside from the fact that there is zero music coming from it. No sound at all. (Which is only music)
I recently upgraded from windows Vista to 8. Which wasn't really my choice but it seems to run fine for the most part, aside from this problem.
If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this I would be intensely grateful. I've tried various compatibility modes and re-downloaded the game multiple times but nothing seems to help.
Not really sure what other info you need, there is no crash log or anything because as I said, the game is running perfectly, aside from the complete absence of music.
Any ideas guys?

Just to make sure, please check your sound options in-game.
It should look like the attached screenshot (volume is a matter of taste of course ;-)

Yeah, the games volume is up and the sound things are toggled.
I've tried untoggling them as well to no avail. Currently everything is set to be on and the volume maxed. Not a peep from the game though.
I suspect Windows 8's midi handling to be the cause of the problem. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the music of KoDP is based on midi.

Midi handling and configuration changed (for the worse) from XP over Vista to 8.
Now with Windows 8 a lot of midi problems are solved by installing a dedicated midi software.
E.g.VirtualMIDISynth (freeware)

No, it is not MIDI.

Well, so much for my suggestion ;-)
Any ideas?
Sound appears to work but music doesn't. Is it handled differently in terms of codec, output, etc.?

Bormac: No sound at all. (Which is only music)
I read that as Bormac is stating all sound in KoDP is music and he hears nothing whatsoever. Not that sound effects work.
The only sound in KoDP that I can recall is music. Which is very nice music and fitting for the various scenes. And there are no sound effects, given that the entire game takes place in a bunch of different still pictures with usually multiple choice options.
But yes. There is no sound at all from the game. Max out its volume in mixer, max out my headphones. Its not very quiet. Not muted. The in game music is set to max, And all music is toggled on. But it just isn't making any noise at all, which is a bummer because I am a big fan of the game.
No ideas, anyone?
Kind of a bummer given the problem seems like it would be...simple to solve... You'd think anyway.
The game is sometimes picky with other programs running. I'm not sure if any of them could affect the sound output, but it's still worth a try shutting down all other running applications (even things like mouse and keyboard tools).

Also try running the game as Administrator (e.g. maybe the sound is muted and only the Admin has proper rights to overwrite the settings) and check the sound options in-game.

There are sound effects as well — when I reimplemented for iOS the big difference is whether a sample loops (music) or not (effect).

But I have no idea how to troubleshoot the original game under Windows. Have you contacted GOG support?
Well, If the game developer doesn't know then. I really don't know what to say. It seems like a lost cause.
I suppose its too much trouble to hope that you'll come back to the first version and fix it up a little at some point?
I Did contact GoG support but they weren't much help either.
I did some experimentation on my own. And I think it is trying to play music.
If I turn the game volume all the way up, and my headset volume up. I can hear a faint sort of "hssss" in the background. Not static, just a non-absence of sound. If I disable game music, it goes away and its just dead air. It also goes away if I turn game volume to zero.
It is like it is trying to play the game audio but it doesn't understand how, so it is just playing silence?
I've re-downloaded the game from GoG multiple times to no avail. I'm not sure what to make of this But it seems like it might be relevant information?

This won't help much, but I can at least confirm that Windows 8 in itself is not the problem. I'm running KoDP on Windows 8, and have had no problems whatsoever. It runs smoothly so far. *knocks on wood* I haven't installed any additional codecs for sound or for video, I don't use any Compatibility mode, and I run the game as admin.

The development system we used was discontinued in 1998. Since it handled all multimedia, there is no way for us to fix it up.

GOG might be able to patch things, but I suspect there are still serious limits on what’s possible.

Thank you very much for your time sir.
If you ever decide to re-release the game on windows, you have at least one sale right here. I adore this game to pieces. And it really bums me out that for whatever reason it doesn't want to run now.
But I understand, not a lot you can do with stuff that's over a decade old at this point.
I'll give GoG another try, but as you said. I suspect there are limits to what they can do as well.
