So this is probably a stupid question, but where can I see that my robotic factories are actually doing something? If I'm reading it right, they should be producing a flat +X production but I'm not actually seeing that anywhere. After I build them, my production breakdown when I hover over it doesn't show anything and I bottom out at zero production if I move my slider all the way down. Shouldn't it be at say 20 for a sufficient planet if I have the slider all the way down?

The production tooltip (the value next to the blue cog icon in the colony view) should list the flat production bonus from the Robotic Factory. Check in the 'Flat Production' section at the bottom of the tooltip.

Also, the Robotic Factory grants you extra flat production to add on top the one you are already generating in that colony. You can then allocate the colony's production into infrastructure development, planetary engineering projects or construction projects. If you decide to allocate all production to planetary engineering, for example, then you will get zero production allocated to both infrastructure development and construction projects.

So, the colony has an overall production value. You can then allocate that production as you see fit through the three different development areas. If you move the construction slider all the way down, then all production is allocated to planetary engineering and infrastructure.

Thanks, got it. For some reason I had it stuck in my head that the factory/mining "production" bonuses were supposed to specifically be "construction" bonuses.
