Well, as far as I'm concerned, looks like that's the end of the line. Game just plain won't run well.

Got the launcher V2 from the sticky.

Glide mode gives me the usual "Failed to initialize 3D hardware accelerator."

DirectX mode, same thing.

Software mode kicks the FPS count through the roof whether I use CPUgrabber or not. Driving is impossible as everything teleports from one place to another.

Tried the alternate atiumag.dll and put it in the game folders. Didn't do a thing. Put it in the game launcher folder. Put it in every damn folder. Zero effect.

Tried using the updated splash.exe, and the results are even worse: no matter which mode I try it out on, the game freezes on startup and I have to fumble my way around a task manager flashing like an epilepsy gif to shut down the game.

There is no bloody way in HELL I am uninstalling my vidcard drivers to put others in place just to run the game. Last time I tried to pull off something like this, it rendered half my Steam games list unplayable.

I'm done. Whatever I paid for the game resulted in nothing but a fleeting nostalgia rush and a desire to go for plan B: pull out my trusty Dreamcast and play Vigilante 8 instead - but it just ain't the same.

GOG shouldn't have released this unless they could actually make it compatible with new systems.

Yeah I agree, I tried everything, every possible fix, every possible patch and workaround, but couldn't get it to run.
My last try was to install it on a virtual WinXP, and start it there, but that resulted just in a blue screen :D

I agree GOG should at least take another look at it, and release a patch or a functional workaround.

It's luck if they do see it. I'm actually surprised at how many they read. If you want to make sure they see it then use support.

The ethics of a paid release for such a beloved but antiquated game are murky at best. A cynic might call it a nostalgia based cash grab.

There are reviews where people are claiming they have been denied a refund, but legally I'd argue that Windows 10 objectively exceeds the "minimum" specs of XP or Vista. GoG on shaky ground here, protected by the low cost of admission. But that's still a fiver they received for damaged goods.

In my view, do not use the launchers as provided here in the forums. There is another way that does work and I have posted in my reddit. All the files are safe to use. I even managed to get multiplayer in Nitro Pack working right.

I got this game working on Windows 7 back when GOG didn't even exist yet.
I know this sounds dumb but it happened to me once, to my total dismay, so give it a try: if you installed everything needed for the game to run and it still runs too fast: Restart the computer. (this is not a joke)

And about the GOG bashing, no, it's not a cash grab... It's not less than what Steam does for that matter, when they release games exactly as they come in retail, without any patches, any fixes, nothing... So wash your mouth before talking crap about GOG.

Some retro games truly did not age well with modern operating systems for one reason or another. The CD version more or less works on MS Virtual PC 2007. I can't remember if it was using XP or Win98 though.

a main problem is that a lot of the community people here try to help but make it much worse, because explain stuff these days expecting the others to be either tweakers, hackers, or IT geeks and whatnot. I yet need to actually see a post that actually explains thoroughly how to make this game work and look good, there is none.

Starting with downloading dgVoodoo and its versions, a ton of sites are offline, others got virus warnings, others are blocked for security reason, already looking bad just trying to find what to download. Once however downloaded, again tweaker/hacker/IT geek talk with how to make it work.

For instance, one step is known as:

"Set the shortcut -glide option"

Really helpful for casual gamers and software users. (Irony OFF)

Why am I usually the only one helping people like myself on other platforms and games, to really make things dummie proof, a step by step (well, how to locate and open a directory not needed lol), to help others make games work. Even on HALO: Reach at start people had no clue why they got a quick load screen when starting the game and nothing happened after, me, as one of the biggest casual PC users found the solution and step by step explained it on their forums and hundreds after me were happy, why I basically almost never see others make it simple stupid?

Sorry, kind of a half-rant I know, but spending hours reading mambojumbo that tweakers/hackers/IT Geeks write for tweakers/hackers/IT Geeks kind of triggers people that just want to have mad fun with this top 10 game of all times.

i tried on vmware, as stated in the previous topic (where i have been throughly ignored), and it is slow as hell, 1 frame per second. and yes all vmware, diretc 3d etc drivers are all installed
