Archimbaud: If you really liked Arcanum, you will like Inquisitor.
Why ? Because for both games, there some high flaws in gameplay and balance. Yet, the story is so attracting that you don't really bother.
On the contrary, if Arcanum was painful for you, you should play another game.
No I'm sorry, you werent even close. While Arcanum has its problems with the game, its not possible to compare to this crap. Arcanum had a pretty straightforward plot, but the dialogue and people in the game were fluid. Not often will I find a game where the writing from characters is more than plausible. Inquisitor took 12 years and in my opinion is still in Alpha.

First things first, melee doesnt work. Yes thats right, any of you that like to go into a real time game and bash at things, be warned-you cant. The reason why is that unlike in Arcanum where fatigue was much less vicious, inquisitor makes combat for melee impossible as you run out of fatigue when fighting 2 bats in the beginning. The people that made this game did a terrible as well with the dialogue. While they give you a hefty amount of dialogue, most of it didnt make sense to a person reading it in english.

Word to the wise-dont get this game, its probably the biggest letdown from a person who really was exited when first hearing about the game. I followed this game for a good amount of time and what a waste.

torqual76: There is a difference between oldschool and just shit. Baldurs Gate is oldschool but fun. Arcanum is oldschool and fun. Fallout 1&2 is oldschool and fun. Inquisitor is oldschool and total shit. The only good thing is the somewhat interesting inquisitor plot. But the rest is just shit.

Unitl act 2 i thought the game's flaws could be forgiven. But now in the ancient tomb i suddenly can not stand the game anymore. In the ancient tomb i get attacked by groups of ghosts that kill my entire party in seconds. Without any chance to heal, win or pass the area.

Gameplay is just atrocious, encounter balance is totally screwed. If you like combat based around drinking 100 heal and manapotions, not winnable encounters, reading through pages and pages of redundant texts that gets repeated by every npc, than play this atrocity. Ah and the game keeps crashing after some time.

The combat is just boring and time consuming. To get to little good parts of the story like the questioning of people you have to slog through dozends of hours of boring imbalanced shit. So it is totally not worth it. And for what it delivers the game is heavily overprized.

Have a nice day

Edit i am a little enraged by the sudden spike in difficulty
Everything you said is true and for what its worth, I hope the game gets pulled from gog.

Seems it is really the kind of game you either love or hate. I spend several hours on it now and I still can't get enough of it. I can see that it has some flaws, but the overall quality makes me forget about that.

Haven't had that much fun with a (new) RPG in years.
My main problem with the game is how dependent it is on Stamina and how some mobs can simply lock you out of combat, succubi in the Kingdom of Sin for example, but aside from those issues I simply loved the game, it's lengthy (took me about 100 hours or so to finish), the story is pretty good, the writing (of which there is a lot) is well done and interesting, while the combat might be rather tedious at start it does get better later on and what I enjoyed the most is that the game doesn't spoon feed the player, so you'll have to ask around the town to know where whatever it is you're searching for is.

Going to have to play it again as a Priest, sounds like a pretty cool class.
Due to horrible design decisions and balance, only a masochist can love this game in its current state. Its a long game, but mostly do to tedious fluffing and the bad combat system.
Its important to note, no class is really viable on its own, if you want to enjoy the game you'll be forced to take magic skills to negotiate some of the bs of this game.

The writing and other things are good, but the game play is just atrocious, as most reviews will say. Yes, some people love it, but just like anything, your hardcore Masochist will min/max and work the system to their benefit, and thats fine, but most people who dont fall under the Hardcore Masochist category wont really enjoy the game. Monster Re-spawning alone will probably kill it for most folks.

Lionheart, Arcanum, TOEE etc all of them have vastly better combat. I will say though, if anyone could mod this game, it'd be 1000% better.

I have to say I am deeply dissapointed with this game. I don't think that its numerous glaring flaws could possibly be overstated, as there are so many problems that could have been avoided with not much thought. Furthermore, whilst most of the criticism has been for the games appaling mechanics I really think that the story and the writing is deserving of pretty severe criticism too. The translation is very clumsy and fells awkward a lot of the time, a problem highlighted by there being so damn much of it. Now reading a wall of text would be fine, but most of the dialogue is trivial, and the quests themselves are pretty much fetch quests. I was expecting a delicate dance of intrigue and unmasking heretics amongst a storm of false accusations. But there isn't really any detective work to do or choices to make. The progression is still quite linear and you'll be spending most of your time slogging through generic enemies using the same rinse and repeat tactics over and over again (most of which involve bad ai exploits - if you got this game partly for the 'old-school' challenge this will probably dissapoint, as in terms of understanding the limited strategy involved the game is actually not 'deep' at all, though may appear to be at first simply because of balanceing issues and obscuring a lot of its own details).

Frustratingly there don't appear to be any patches planned. Maybe fan mods will help fix/improve this game. However, apart from the general concept I really don't think there is much to save. Anyway, y'all know this just my opinion.
this game is awesome. the look is very nice. though i don't like the whole crap about evil demons and good angels, most quests are interesting. and more important doing quests is interesting, cause you don't have a stupid map with marks, like in every present-day game. this game is definitely the best rpg since the time arcanum was there. not a stupid shit like dragon age or fallout 3.
This is not a game that lets you spend skill points and attributes based on what weather you're currently having, but challenges you to think about what will be best for your character according to the level he's currently at with it's limitations (see skill infos - they require a certain amount of attribute points as well as a certain level to upgrade).

Anyone who thinks combat is flawed should realize that it's not supposed to be easy especially since there's no idiotic level scaling involved. If you have to spend 5 minutes to kill a monster, you're probably in the wrong area or doing a bad job at playing at the best of your ability - if none of that applies, then your probably on hard mode where you shouldn't be if you're hoping for a hard mode that is easy. Seriously, wtf - it's called hard for a reason, and that reason may well be that you will need a bunch of potions to buff your resistances, some spells do buff your fighting skills, and some overall management skills of finance, equipment, and experience investment.

Moreover, what would be the point of advancing level and gathering experience if combat were easy from the start?

I'm playing a priest and have to say that it's more of an achievement to become able to instantly kill a whole room of monsters with one click after spending some days having to kill them one at a time then it is to have a shiny unnerving popup telling you you've achieved something by scratching your ass like in other games.

The game doesn't only let you discover some people, some areas and some stuff in chests but also mechanics that are different from other games you've played so far.

And to those who think arcanum was good, they're right, it was, even if harm totally made every other damage spell useless and you could get it right from the start; even if you couldn't kill dragons on lvl 1 even if you somehow found them by exploring; even if the quests there were pretty much go get that and bring it back. This is no different: should you find something that's "unbalanced" please bear in mind that you don't have to use it if it makes you more overpowered than you'd like and if something doesn't get you any advantage then by all means, just don't invest in it. (talking bout perception and identify) This is called freedom of choice and in the fantasy world such a thing does exist)

As for minor bugs and crashes - they're everywhere. Can't recall any game that did everything right from the start on all possible systems.
SO much hate in this thread...

This game has loads of faults, but it sticks. No matter who you are, after beating it, you will feel good with yourself - it is really an accomplishment. If you play it instead of reading an action book or watching an action movie, than you wont like it. If you are the kind of guy who is a little conservatory with his games, who wants to be real tested in order to archive something, than this is a good field to play. That is the mature way to think for many of us. If you are under 20, chances are that you wont be into it.

I cannot say I hated a game more than this one, but the more I played, the more I also loved it.

If you are decently smart and patient, you will find it very hard to not get drawn into this game.
Baldur's, Arcanum, Nw2 are all good games in their own right. This is different in atmosphere - I find it closer in many aspects, including difficulty, with Divine Divinity. But, despite 2012, I still call it, with love, an old school.

PS. I know you will hate the texts in the beginning but, very soon, considering how careful you have to play in order to finish the quests, you will reread every word of it and also regret you did not play attention to some into the beginning. Besides, the story will drag you into reading everything. Every named character in this game has something to do with some quest or the other. But while you gain experience you will know who and when you will get what kind of info and reading the walls of text will be easier.

PS2. I keep a cycle of 5 saves 1,2,3,4 and 5 and cycle through them constantly. Those besides a special save at every big mail-stone. I recommend you do the same. Or try the easy setting. But you will lose something.

PS3. Punks, the game is what it is and worth its money. Even if you did not like it. I can think of very few games in the last 5 years (witcher, Crusader kings 2) that should make history. Remember this is a rather indie game that took 10+ years to develop. SHow those guys some respect. And btw, where on earth did that DiCerbio run off when I did not have enough evidence to incriminate him? It hunts me.

Sabin_Stargem: However, the saving grace of Inquisitor is being able to investigate people and their stories, which could be interesting as you piece the truth together. The problem is that the combat is not just a foil to the roleplaying, it actually spoils things because it serves as an obnoxious barrier to the good stuff. Unfortunately, there is a lot of combat in the first act, so your patience and desire to see the roleplaying through would be seriously tested by the bordom.

sear: Act 1 has the least combat of all the acts. The others are filled with between 2-4 times as many dungeons and in general, while the environments are also bigger, there aren't many more quests or characters. The game gets significantly worse as it goes on, but the non-combat stuff does get a little better. Shame that all it amounts to is clicking on dialogue options until they all disappear and witnessing the 100% linear story with almost zero choice & consequence.
Is this true? Is there really even more combat (and dungeon crawling) after act 1? I really dont like the combat in this game and already willing to quit. Currently in the iron mines and hating every minute of it, didnt really enjoy the combat before that either. Playing as a thief so no hopes of oneshotting everyone in a room either like the priest apparently can in late game.

This game has been the biggest disappointment of the year for me. I've tried very hard to like it, but I just can't do it. The combat system is so horrible that I can't even remember the last time I played something that came even close to this awfulness. The rest of the game, all the non-combat parts, is nothing special either, but I could possibly even enjoy it somewhat without the combat.

Honestly, the combat system is the worst ever. It ruins all the little fun the game could maybe otherwise offer. It's boring, it's tedious, it's clumsy, it's a total waste of time and money.

For me, Inquisitor has no saving graces.

Game is excellent, however the game's manuals are dismal. They don't explain game mechanics at all. Your best bet is to search Steam or GOG forums for answers. Once you understand how the game works, the game becomes engrossing.
