Trying to play Defiance since I can't run the original without crashing has revealed that the game runs WAY too fast, like it's meant to be played the Flash

How does one slow it down to be playable?

Try turning v-sync on or use another form of framelimiting.
I think this game runs best with 30 or maybe 60 fps but no more.
