Ok, so I just bought a surface pro 3. 8 gigs ram, 512 hard drive. I know it's not a beefy gaming machine by any means, but it isi plenty powerful to run an infinity engine game. Or should be. Unfortunately it lags pretty badly. I'm running windows 10 btw.

I lowered the graphics to below minimum, turned everything down as low as it will go, and am running it in windowed mode. It's working better but still lags fairly significantly. I'm sure it's an easy fix but I've managed to overlook it so far. Please help I would love to play this game again, it's been years.

I have the i7 as well. Integrated graphics.

I think I see your problem. If I am not wrong, you can downgrade to Windows 7 for free, and you probably should...

Not really an option. I really like windows 10, and it's necessary for the software I am running at work. Hopefully there is a different option.

Have you installed DDrawFix?

Sadly it didn't work. In fact it rendered it unplayable. If I did the 1st option, the game would run but was extremely slow and the cursor flickering was so bad, it made the game very difficult to play. The second option made it to where the game wouldn't start. I would click the launcher, and it would turn 3/4 of the screen black, and then crash. I've done a fresh install of the game and it still won['t start now after installing ddrawfix. Any suggestions? I've also uninstalled ddrawfix through the application, but it seems like it's still there, as the game now will not start.

When you say you did a fresh install, did you uninstall the game from Control Panel and then delete any remnant folder/s? You must do this, because if an configuration files are left they will affect your reinstall. Also, you need to be sure that Windows 10 doesn't ghost files to an 'appdata' folder, like Win 7 does if you install to a protected folder, like Program Files (but any protected folder).
I remember there are areas with slowdown problem, Goblin Warrens is one of these place.
You can try an unofficial fix host at sorcerers.net and see if it work.

At least it worked for me on the XP, both GOG edition and Traditional Chinese CD version.
I haven't try it on Win10, but sure to come back someday.
Thanks for all the advice. I did have to basically wipe it from my system but I've got it working again. Not sure what worked but it doesnt' lag very badly. Occasional slowdowns but nothing that can't be worked with. Thanks for all the help guys!
