Hi all, can't figure this out. When I select a touch-attack spell I don't get the normal "spell target" icon, I get the normal "sword" icon for a melee/missile attack. Selecting an opponent then simply makes a normal melee/missile attack. I effectively can't use any touch-attack spells.

Touch-based buffing spells work normally: ie I select the spell and get the "spell target" icon to select self or ally. But the "spell target" icon doesn't appear during combat for touch-attack spells.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Cast the spell and don't select any target. The caster will finish casting after which his weapon will turn into the magic spell. Then you can select a target.
Same goes for some of the other "weapon" spells.

If you select a target right after casting but before the casting starts, then as you say the normal mellee/missile attack will override the spell casting.
Thanks - couldn't figure that out and it was driving me mad - looked like the spell never happened. I see that once the spell is cast, the spell icon replaces the weapon icon in the bar down the bottom.

Interesting that this is different to buffing spells, which need a target selected before casting, but I guess that's the point of "weapon" spells - you cast the spell then have it "ready" to attack whoever you want once it's completed

I believe IWD2 generally uses 3rd Ed rules, instead of the 2nd Ed rules of previous games. In 2nd Ed, if you wiffed your attack roll, then the spell was wasted. In 3rd Ed, you keep the 'charge' until you manage to hit something (or otherwise cancel the 'charge').

I don't know if this was implemented for IWD2, but if it was, then that would explain the change in behavior. You get an attack spell for a weapon until you manage to hit something with it. Sort of like a bow with 1 arrow, I guess.
