I was testing out some monitor cables and it turns out for whatever reason, using a mini HDMI cable will cause the "stopped responding" problem when starting the game. If you use a DVI cable, the game will not run into that problem and starts up just fine. I am able to recreate the problem and it just doesn't work with my mini HDMI cable. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, tho I have two screens. One with HDMI and one with DVI. If I unplug the HDMI it works.
