I'm on windows vista, and all other games from gog.com and other sources work just fine.

Icewind dale (from gog) starts up fine, but when I select 'create new game' and then 'full game' and click 'done,' the box greys out a little and nothing else happens. I waited several minutes and nothing happened. What gives? Is the game working for other people?

I ran it as administrator and such, nothing changed.

By "ran it as administrator" do you mean you ran it on the user that has administrative rights or that you right clicked the .exe and clicked "run as administrator", because it's the latter that is supposed to solve that problem.
I did the latter, right clicking and selecting run as admin.

I downloaded and ran the game on a different computer, which has XP, and it worked fine. Also, the 'Load Game' option was active from the beginning. On my vista computer, where it isn't working, the Load Game option is not active, so maybe that can also provide a clue. My problem has to be common, as I said, because my specs are quite commonplace.
Did you install it in Program Files by any chance? Vista & 7 are very protective of that folder and often don't let programs write to it and it might be refusing the game permission to make a save folder. Have a look on your XP computer and see if there's a folder created for the save, you might be able to manually create it on your vista PC but it might be better to try and install it in a different directory
i had exactly the same problem and solved it by running game in compatibility with xp mode with run as admin and bottom three options (disable windows themes etc) checked.
I've tried about a dozen different suggestions in this forum for how to fix this, and nothing works on Vista. I can run every other GOG game that I've purchased, and every other normal modern game that I purchase, but this one doesn't work.

If the suggestion appears anywhere on this forum, I've tried it. New folder, checking and unchecking every damn random graphic option, running as admin, XP compatibility mode (a crock of crap, with Vista, by the way, since ID works on my XP machine but doesn't work in XP compatibility mode), etc. etc. etc.

You're definately not alone, dude. I'm having this same issue right now. Installed the game on my girl's laptop and it runs fine. Installed it on my own desktop (Win. Vista 64 installed) and I can't get it to run. Get same error with the box "greying out" a little. This must be a known problem to GOG since it's becoming more commonplace. I sent them an email sometime ago (last week) but have yet to get a reply or a solution. This sucks man. $9.99 down the drain. And ohhhh, Icewind Dale, how I miss you!
yeah, Colossus, good to know there are others. I figured that there had to be - anybody on vista must be having this problem, since my computer is totally normal and actually specced for games.

Like you, I've gotten no response from gog to my email last week.
I had this issue, too, but I ran as admin and it worked, so... I don't know.

Of course, every time I start a new game I get my first (stupidly-done) party as of the first save I made with them. But that's probably unconnected.
Same prob here i think. box greys out and if i click alittle right in the bottom of the text description i have a new button that says done but can find no other buttons so assume its an error message or something that i cant read cause the graphics box is totally hidden. tried most of what i have found on here to no effect yet hopefully something changes soon and i can either find the answer or post a solution.
Not helpful advice, but wanted to note that I'm on a Vista 64 bit machine and have no problem starting the game. Definitely install the game in a non program files directory though!

I'm having issues many hours later in the game (noted in a different thread), but none at the start with Vista.
