Rock, Paper, Shotgun posted a "making of"/quasi-postmortem of Hostile Waters a while back, and I've been wanting to try it ever since. I somehow gave it a miss when it first came out, so I'm glad to see it on GOG. I think it will be my first purchase here.
Thanks for the link. Having never heard of this game I still chose it as my free second title since a friend recommended it and I know he has good taste in games. That and the fact that Warren Ellis wrote the thing meant the story was bound to be interesting if nothing else.
Turns out he was right, this is a very good alternative take on the RTS genre and the whole soulchip thing that was borrowed from Rogue Trooper creates some fascinating character possibilities.
Anyway, should be a good read even if Kieron Gillen can be a bit longwinded. Finding out how such a game came to be should be interesting.
Here is what Julian Widdows (PM) wrote for GOG about Multiplayer patch:
"We'd wanted the game to be multiplayer day one for sure and, for a while, we were developing it as a multiplayer experience. Various commercial constraints made this road difficult, however, meaning we had to cut back to just the single player experience mid-way through development.
By the time we finished the game it really was very much a single player experience, and the patch was just that - a patch to try and add multiplayer to what was now at its very core a single player game. This was a patch we had a little over three months to develop and deliver.
As I write this I come to a realisation I've never had before - the game is better left with only the thought of the patch and what it might have been like, rather than the reality of what it was like. The game, as it was released, is the game we made and, maybe putting this to bed once and for all, I think it should stay that way. The patch is the mystery box; best left unopened......"

I've nothing to add... :)

Thanks Rysa (and KG) for letting us know that. Something of a shame, but at the same time they might be right that dreaming of what might have been is possibly best. To approach it more cynically, particularly given the limited development resources this patch saw, maybe it's better to remain intruiged than disappointed.
To answer a question here, yes the story is excellent. Far better than I had any right to expect with a superb ending (a rarity for games). While the AI, particularly compared to some modern titles, can be rather dumb, it remains a fantastic, unique game overall. Play it. Please.
Wow, thanks for posting this and thanks for even asking, that was unexpected :)
I also thought about a multiplayer mode, but at least that short thinking led me to the conclusion that it wouldn't work out well. While I think the AI in Hostile Waters isn't bad, it really isn't too functional when let alone. In the campaign this isn't a big problem, as you are able to proceed slowly and especially stop time while planning your strategy, so thinks usually don't get very hectic. But I couldn't think of a way how you could do this in multiplayer mode without making the whole game become very hectic and uncontrollable.
I guess rather than hoping for a multiplayer patch for HW we should hope for a team to develop a game with HW's concept in mind but building a "proper" multiplayer mode on that :)
I played it years ago and it was just fantastic. First time I'd ever cared about my troops on an emotional level tbh.
I understand now. Thanks.
