More so than any game I've played this game blurs the line between RTS and tactical first person combat. Unlike Battlezone, all the vehicles are perfectly playable, distinctive, fun and useful, I never felt like my AI units were out-gunning me. In fact, if there's a major fault its that a clever player can learn to defeat the AI opponents almost alone with AI units mopping up, although this mostly just made me feel big.
This game has a decent but light plot which mostly serves to set the scene for a number of missions which mostly come down to base destruction but often have other objectives as well. All the missions are fun and have enough tactical variety along with new units and weapons thrown in to keep you occupied. I personally rarely left the hot-seat of my cloaked missile-loaded hovercraft, but when I did I never felt that I was wasting my time and it was great
The AI units are all competent and can take care of themselves better than you can until they are overwhelmed, at which point it all goes a bit wrong, they lack the sense to retreat, but otherwise they're great and have a little bit (a very little bit) of personality, enough to make you think of them as more than cannon fodder. There's even a bit of back-talk if you spend too much time directly controlling them.
I have a couple of gripes, the enemy AI is easily manipulated once you know the game mechanics and now and then, the plot is a little random, but it was fun right to the end. I wasn't really ready for it to end (even though it's of a good length) and that's a rare thing in today's marketplace, it really is just fun to play, I thoroughly recommend this little gem.
