Or does it allow you to save anywhere, anytime? I started to buy the game, but I have a strong dislike of checkpoint saves & not being able to save my game when I want to.

From some posts I've read, it appears that the game is checkpoint saves, only. Please clue me in on the save game mechanism here--thanks in advance!
You can manual save, but only at a campfire.
Okay so.... Let's see here.

There's checkpoints, but I believe they're only "saved" as long as you're ingame for that session. All saves are handled through campfires but either manual or quicksave.

I'm not 100% certain if there's ever any actual autosaves, because I didn't spend a ton of time on the gog version because my 5700 XT struggled with it a lot. Might fire it up again and see how it does.

So long story short - campfires, campfires, campfires and possibly an occasional autosave?

It's a bit of a throwback in some respects and plays like an older ubi game such as farcry 3 imho. Very similar mechanics. The story is what keeps me coming back and wanting to keep going... Such that it is.

As far as I can remember, it does some kind of automatic saves if you progress in any task. Manual saves are a good way to be sure your actual resources are saved as well before exiting the game, or to make different copies (using different save slots).
Saving is still easy because through the map you can teleport to a known neighbourg campfire and save here.
So when you load you are in a somewhat secure area, and it won't be long to go back to your quest.
