Horizon Zero Dawn has the worst graphics of any game in my collection, to the extent that I an considering refunding.

Using auto-detect the game set everything to Ultra. Even reducing the settings to 'medium' and setting a 30 FPS limit, however, grass textures often don't rezz at all, many others are blurry, etc.

Anyone got any tips for getting decent graphics from this game on a 6GB 1660 Ti?

It seems Horizon Zero Dawn is so poorly optimised it just can't cope with 4k. The 'solution' is reducing the resolution. Strange, since the game doesn't even have much to look at (I'm still at the beginning).

Well trying to run it at 4k is a bit of a silly idea, in no way shape or form is a 1660ti a 4k card.

Instead of outright refusing to run, if you exceed VRAM constraints, HZD refuses to load textures, making it look kind of like a N64 game. FPS limiting doesn't change anything. With my 6GB 2060, I had good luck @1440p upscaled to 4K. Give it a try at that or 1080p and see if the textures still refuse to load and then experiment from there.

Also, there was an update to the game this morning that added DLSS. I don't recall offhand if the 16 series allows DLSS, but that might also be worth investigating.

Good luck!
From what I have read, 900 series cards are the oldest that support it.

dlss works only on 2k/3k series GPUs. 16xx don't have it because those GPU don't have tensor cores that run DLSS

Hey, if you set the game to play on Windowed Borderless mode you can set the resolution to a lower one while using your full screen. This is helping me a lot in my good old computer bought in 2013 and where the graphic card was the only thing I updated (to a 980ti) and will probably help you too.

In my case I have an ultrawide monitor and I play at 2560x1440. It is very fluid except on certain spots (which I don't care). A much better optimised game than, for example, Control.

I have a GTX 970 card with 3.5 GiB of GDDR5 (and 512 MiB of useless slower VRAM) and I can play the game has it used to run on PS4, at full 1080p / 30 fps. I don't know about the 1660 Ti though...

I honestly don't mind ported games with limited or no eye candies as long as they run as well as they ran on original consoles. That's the case here, AFAIK.
